The limits of Mages
I haven't used the XP cap remover. Yet ( I plan to clock it once, first). For anyone who has, are ninth level spells restricted by intelligence? An intelligence of 18 is supposed to be required to cast ninth level spells, 16 or 17 for eighth. If not, with 'chance to learn spell' percentages removed, it raises the question 'what does intelligence do?'. The only thing left is max no. of spells per level. That would mean even someone with an intelligence of about 10 could become a super-powerful Mage. Kinda stupid, really....

Uh, intelligence of 10 would limit the dude to level 5 spells. That's like saying that Jan is just as good a mage as say, Edwin or Imoen. Edwin is 50,000 EXP away from THREE level 9 spells. Can you say time stop, spell trap, and spellstrike? Plus with an intelligence of 10, the chance to learn a spell is only 40%. But you could always just quaff a few intelligence potions before you learned a spell. But still, a mage with 10 intelligence is like a thief with a dexterity of 10 or a fighter with a strength of 10. Pretty useless, if you ask me.

You appear to have missd the point entirely Gluteus Maximus, I was asking a question. I haven't got to 18th level, so I don't know if the max spell level limits apply (as all the mages I have used have at least 16 intelligence which would allow 8th level spells). I thought that they probably wouldn't, considering the other rules they have chosen to implement, like letting mages copy spells of a level they can not yet cast into their books, and letting them use scrolls beyond their level capabilties without a chance of failure. If they have used the rule, then I agree, a 10 intelligence mage would be pretty pathetic. As for the potion idea, if the rules were implemented properly, when the potion ran out you would lose the ability to cast those spells.

Yea, I now see what you are saying. But casting spells from scrolls can put you in the poor house pretty quick. Even with a high reputation and charisma, the level 8+ spells are too expensive to waste by casting them from scrolls. And they are rare enough to make you think twice before casting, say, time stop. I think there are a total of 3 time stop scrolls in the game. What if the expansion pack doesn't have any more? You're kind of hooped once your "pure" mage reaches 3,000,000 EXP. I would have thought that being of low intelligence, one would have trouble casting a spell, even from a scroll. Oh well, I guess it's just a weakness of the game system.
