I think that names are hugely important to BG2 and a crucial part of the atmosphere. Like other players, I draw on Viking history and saga for some of my names. I once had a dwarf warrior named 'Thorkell the short'--an inversion of the real Thorkell the Tall, who conquered England for Sweyn Forkbeard of Denmark in 1016.
My one complaint (not really a complaint, more a suggestion) about BG2, is that characters cannot change or expand their names during game play. A change of name could be very dramatic. Just think of Tolkien. Aragorn the ranger becomes a different person when he assumes the name Elessar the Elfstone. History provides many other examples: Caius Martius becomes Coriolanus, Publius Cornelius Scipio becomes Scipio Africanus. Then there are all those superb Viking nicknames: Ragnar Hairybreeks, Onund Treefoot, Harald Finehair, Halgerd Longlegs, etc.
My suggestion for BG3: Allow players to choose a nickname as well as a real name, and allow them to add an heroic cognomen or surname later in the game. It would easy to configure electronically, and it would add so much to the atmosphere.

Yes, names certainly do contribute to image.
Famous people probably owe some of their success to name changes.
I mean, how could "Dzugashvili" convey the same menace as "Stalin"? Or, on a less serious note, how about "Patsy McClenny" instead of "Morgan Fairchild"?
My PC is an Undead Hunter called Parsifal--not an original name, but, I think, a good choice for a pure and noble Paladin. (Besides, I like Wagner's operas.)
