not sure but maybe for the bridge this is normal (i haven't got that far in the game yet) but any time i go to city gates or the bridge, i get ambushed by some kick@$$ mages and lose 2/3 of my party. i'd really like to go to windspear hills to do my quests there but can't get there without getting jumped. any ideas?
my party consists of Jaheira, Minsc, Yoshimo, Aerie and myself (lawful good Paladin)
TIA
can't go to city gates or the bridge

Prepare ahead of time with longterm spells. Pull Aerie and Jaheira back. Allow the latter to cast her wonderful, patented bug caller. Have Aerie cast some magic missiles at the mages and clerics among your attackers.
Have Yoshimo run interference for Aerie and Jaheira. (Make sure you have enough health potions!) Send your paladin and Minsc against the enemy's mage and cleric, so they're thoroughly occupied. Once the mage and cleric are engaged and no longer casting, Aerie and Jaheira can turn their magical attention to the other enemies. If they have summons spells available, use those.
The early ambushes are actually among the more interesting fights in BG2, being better balanced and lacking all the high end "my atom bomb is bigger than your atom bomb" overkill when everybody has so many goodies and spells.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
spoilers
i downloaded several mods, i forget which, but one of them gives you harder ambushes. Imagine my surprise when i was ambushed by a red dragon!
Then you must be pretty high level.
Those ambushes come with the tactics mod, don't they? I've got that mod installed, too. However, I don't seem to be ambushed anymore -now that I think of it, I never had any of the ambushes-, maybe a different mod overwrites that certain component.

Nah, its the "wilderness encounters" when you go across the world map.
I didn't install the city encounters because I thought it was kinda annoying.
Btw the tactics small teeth pass is pretty crazy. lol the red dragon breath has some long range... Is it the same for all improved dragons?
