How good is KotOR?
How good is KotOR? should I buy it or rent it or should I rather wait for a much better sequel?

Never played it, but I have heard some reviews: if its any consolation, they gave it a 9 out of 10, and say that you can fight dark jedi, use the "force" and what not, also you can do the hand gesture and make people see things your way...

Lifeishell, I know you like Morrowind, and I'm a fellow Morrowind lover, and I love this game, if that's any consolation for you. I've beaten it 6 times already, and I'm still not tired of it. Like Noober said, it may be a little short, but I really didn't notice it while I was playing. I would say buy it. And then buy KotOR II. I know I'm gonna. It is really fun. Being able to be light or dark. It's just... unique. I dunno. It's a really fun game.
I'm an xboxer.
Personally - I think the game is decent enough for a couple of play throughs, but it dosen't (didn't) really have long time staying power for me.
So rent it, if that is a possiblity - you can always purchase it later if you really want it.
That's pretty much my opinion. Aside from the graphics, it feels like a trial run for BG2.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Pure addictive and great gameplay. Not as in depth as the BG series and no MP like Neverwinter Nights but this is the best single player RPG experience since BG2. It kills Neverwinter Nights single player. You can play the game for 60 hours and still not experience all that it has to offer. Many people already consider KOTOR a better story and plot than SW1 M, SW2:CW, and SW6:ROTJ. The graphics are outstanding granted you have the hardware to play it. It is MUCH better on the PC than XBox which is no surprise. Great story telling and really "feels" like you are in the Star Wars universe unlike crappy Galaxies. You should definitely buy it if you love RPGs, or if you're a fan of the Star Wars universe. Rent it if you are a casual gamer or a fan of the Jedi Knight series because you might get impatient with KOTOR (with the whole leveling up and customization). I don't understand WHY the guy who played 72 straight hours recommended rental instead of purchase when he played 72 STRAIGHT HOURS! That's good money spent right there for a RPG. There are multiple endings and a bunch of customization and side quests so the replay value is there but not as much as Neverwinter or a MP driven game. I rate this game 9.2/10. Definitely lives up to it's bill as game of the year.

I’d recommend buy as well. I waited several months after it’s release to buy the game, mostly because I had to upgrade to a new PC. When the price dropped to $30, I snatched it up and have been playing it for almost 4 months now (I just started my 5th game). Now that the price is down to $20, KotOR is a bargain not to be missed.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do about KotOR2. I know I’ll eventually buy it, but whether I buy at $50 or wait for the price to drop remains to be seen. I may hold out until they release the first patch and then buy.

"That's because I killed him." "Hm. That was very proactive of you." SWKotOR2

The thing that worries me about KOTOR2 though is their developer...the developer's of Icewind Dale series. Bioware has a NACK for great story telling. Where as Icewind Dale I and II's storylines pretty much sucked and it became ultimate hack and slash rather than adventure and the side quests SUCKED big time. Not that the games were bad (I own them) but were a whole tier below Baldur's Gate. I think KOTOR2 could be like that...pure hack and slash and a really linear story with boring side quests. It will be good but something tells me it would be classic if not game of the year if Bioware had produced it.

Eventhough it is somewhat off topic:

I must say - I have more "faith" in Obsidan Entertainment creating a good cRPG, then I have towards Bioware at the moment.
And besides - IWD was meant to be hack n' slash/dungeon crawl.

Pretty much my view. It's pretty to look at, but it lacks the wealth of optional quests and multiple paths to success of BG2, and the difficulty of BG2/ToB.

Baldur's Gate was epic. It had over 100 hours of gameplay. There is no way ANY RPG has even come close to the depth of Baldur's Gate. It was the first RPG game that made me care about EVERYONE in my party especially BG2 and TOB...outstanding.
I think a more realistic comparison of KOTOR is to Neverwinter Nights HoU (best SP campaign of Neverwinter Nights) or Morrowind. A 3D RPG which obviously has less depth (imagine BG2 in 3D - probably take 10 CDs!). KOTOR beats those IMO by a mile.
But gameplay wise BG2 is still the deepest RPG I have ever played. No other game even comes close.

Have you played Morrowind? I've never played BG (I did play BG A II - it sucked) but Morrowind was pretty gosh darn tootin indepth with easily 100 hours of play plus unlimited class creation/replayability options. Just wondering if anyone has played both games (start to finish, all quests, all characters) and if so, how do they compare?
