Metalheads & rock fans, I need help (CD suggestions)

Post by Galuf the Dwarf »

Hey guys, I was wondering if any could suggest any CDs by these bands:

- Motorhead. I've got 'Ace of Spades' & 'Inferno' (their latest), and love them both. What about 'Overkill 'and 'Iron Fist'? Finally, which album is "Eat the Rich" on?

- Megadeth. Of them, I've got 'Countdown to Extinction' (fav), 'Rust in Peace', and 'The World Needs a Hero'. I've seen that they have a new album called 'The System Has Failed,' although I remember them breaking up after Dave Mustaine damaged the nerves in one of his arms back in 2002.
Anyhoo, what other albums are pretty good by them?

- Pantera. Got 'Vulgar Display of Power.' What's the word on 'Cowboys from Hell'?

Cowboys From Hell is an ace cd, but I'd recommend Far Beyond Driven (possibly the band's best album) over it.

Get No Sleep Til Hammersmith by Motörhead, it's their live album from 1981 in case you haven't heard about it, and possibly one of the greatest thrash albums ever. The live sound is amazing, and there is an extra cd with "deleted scenes" material, which is entertaining, though nothing exhilerating.

Hope that helps.

I could suggest some songs from underground rock bands I like, but if you already have the name of the bands you want. Why do we need to suggest CDs for you? Just go out and get one. Even if you don't get the one that would be your favorite, you would still get a good CD.
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

Well, I've run into disappointments in the past, Bloodthroe, so I wish to plan my purchases accordingly.

Motorhead is Motorhead. Plain and simple, they are what they are, a kick ass band. Anything by them is worth checking out.

Megadeth...Peace Sells is a classic CD. Youthanasia is a bit more prettied up, but still a good albumn to grab. The new CD I haven't heard though. Yeah, they did break up, but Dave put together a new lineup......including Chris Polands return to the band.

Cowboys From Hell.....has Cemetary Gates. Nuff said. It's a great CD.

I reckoned No Sleep Till Hammersmith was Motorhead's best album though not an album proper...the sleeve design is ****ing wank, but give them a chance to be king gormlesses with mercy.

Another suggestion needed.

Alright, I really had to bring this thread back for something else.

Are there any female rock bands that can be suggested for these requirements?

- Have to actually sing at least 85% of the time. Female vocalists screeching is a hint too much.

- Not ultra-gothic or dominatrix-oriented or anything like that. They should want to rock above all else!

- Has a sound a hint similar to bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, or Iced Earth. Still, they don't have to DIRECTLY sound like that, but something kinda close to those bands.

- Has released some actual material of their own. Covers of another band is fun, but I'm looking for some original material here!

I'll opt for underground female bands IF AND ONLY IF no mainstream female band fits these requirements.

Don't know if you'd place Otep in any category you would like, but its hardcore/metal with a female lead singer who writes her own lyrics. I have to be in a specific mood to listen to just about anything, she's got some extremely contraversial lyrics...I hate having to say that but for anyone who's heard the ones about her father I'd have to say they'd know what I meant.

I'm not sure if you would have any around you, but the store FYE has things you can scan cd's in their store and listen to them. A store like that could help you out quite a bit in picking out the cd's you wanted. I do know most chain stores don't end up carrying much on the type of music I listen to however so you may run into a problem like that.

My girlfriend tends to like Jack Off Jill, but considering the three bands you mentioned, that band isn't all that close to it. Figured it may be worth mentioning though, they dont get any kind of radio time or anything so you either know them from someone or don't hear of them kind of thing.

I really can't think of any bands with female artists along those lines except for modern ones, and like, Heart. Unfortunately a lot of the female vocalists I've come across that go into the metal scene end up screeching which I cannot tolerate. Simply irritating to deal with, man or woman.

1) What's the closest mainstream bands that Jack Off Jill sound like?

2) Unfortunately, Magrus, I have heard Otep, and that's not my thing. Not really singing, and a hint too much controversy for my case. Sorry man. :(

3) I accept Heart as legends, but overall they're music's just a tad too mellow for me.

4) Definitely got an FYE pretty close by. I just wasn't sure how that thing you described worked (until now). Thanks for that bit, man. ;)

Warlock. They're an older band, but IMO they're the best thing going for a band with a female vocalist. Doro Pesch has the vocal style, attitude, and grit that most other female metal acts never came across with. As under rated as lita Ford was over rated, and that's saying something :D

The Demolition Doll Rods are the rockingest girl band to exist, although one of them's a boy...

Admittedly they don't sound anything like Metallica, but having the word 'rock' in about 85% of their song titles is real guarentee....

The Distillers have a female vocalist, but that doesn't sound like the bands you mentioned, though it is rock.

Honestly, I don't know who to compare them to, but if your wanting something close to pantera and metallica, not even close to old school metal. I figured I'd throw that in there since I couldn't really think of any female lyricists that weren't screaching that were into the rock/metal scene and hey, I didn't think it was something I'd like but some of the songs aren't have bad to me. They go back and forth from mellow to metal type stuff, but the music definately has a rock feel to it. If you happen to find a cd that you can grab and listen to, I suggest at least giving it a try. I'd have to say they've done a good job of making music, not overly complex stuff, but then all of the older rock bands keep the music simple too. Review says they're like a female version of Marilyn Manson, I really don't see any resemble aside from them snagging one his old bandmembers and the fact they've got a few odd songs. Music isn't like his at all in my opinion.

If you register at http://www.allmusic.com you can listen to clips of songs from bands on their site, including this band. Might be easier than going to the mall. (simple registration by the way)

Well, I'll see if I can hear some stuff of theirs somewhere along the line.

What about amazon.com? They allow people to play samples of music, so that may work. I'll keep allmusic in mind, though.

frogus: They do really sound like good hard rock, right? I've listened to a few other bands w/ female vocalists (but only one who is fully female), including Kittie, Eve 6, and only Eve 6 is one I'm neutral on. DDR do actually sing 85% of the time or more, correct?

Bloodstalker: Warlock? Hmmmm, sounds familiar.

Anyone heard any of the extra tracts (particularly tracks 14 and 15) off of Motorhead's 'Ace of Spades?' It seems to consist of Lemmy performing some songs with a band that has a female vocalist. Who was that? I've heard it was a band called Girlschool.

Overkill is a kick-butt record by Motorhead. I concur with BS, though, you can't go wrong picking anything they've done. I think I like Overkill the best since it has some of their best stuff on there (IMO). It's been ages since I listened to the Ace of Spades, so I'm ignorant of those extra tracks.

Another good band to look up is Chastain. Leather Leone did vocals for his band for a while, and she is awesome. It's tough to locate most of David Chastain's stuff since he shuffled labels, managers, and band names a bit, but Leviathan Records put out the two albums I like the most, which are "The Seventh of Never" and "Ruler of the Wasteland." Chastain is a guitar god (though a mostly unknown one except to ancient metalheads like myself :o ), his playing innovative and progressive. He demonstrates his classical and jazz background by fusing it with metal riffs, creating some pretty awesome stuff. His lead playing is so hot at times you'd swear you could hear the the fretboard of his Fender burning. :D

(Note to Bloodstalker: A music shop here in Austin is selling brand-spanking new BC Rich Warlocks for $200!!! Just for this weekend though, and I'm broke. :( )

I thought someone would say as much. I did give a listen to the original version of the title track (Thank you, Amazon.com!) and I don't know whether that version or the Metallica's cover of the song from their performance at Motorheadache '95 (the songs they did being featured on their 'Garage Inc.' album).

I swear, I never heard a faster AND harder drummer than Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor. That guy was CRAZY! Really, you just listen to that one part in 'Ace of Spades' (the song); 2 minutes into the song, you'd swear the veins in his arms would explode!

Note: The 'extra tracks' were likely added to the reissue of 'Ace of Spades.'

Melissa Auf De Maur released a solo album just recently. A really talented gal and possibly the only good thing to of come out of Hole. She was also in Smashing Pumpkins towards the end of their career. She can rock, take my word on that. ;)

Hey i am looking for some good heavy metal cds. I already have European metal like Nightwish, Vintersorg etc. I am trying to get a copy of Engima and BT (they both use metal and gregorian chants something i am very fond of).

I was thinking ofgetting some american bands as i am in th eUS right now. I don't want stuff like System of a Down.Too much noise an too little music. Tool is good, Crystal Method etc.

Any suggestions?

Along the lines of Tool and Crystal Method? Those are two somewhat stand-alone type bands, Tool definately is, and Crystal Method is more techno type sound.

A Perfect Circle is a natural choice for a Tool fan, it's the lead singer of Tool's second band in case you hadn't heard of them.

Filter possibly if you like C.M., their styles are somewhat close.

I like Omniblank, rock/metal band that actually has a good sound with lyrics you can understand. If you end up in a store with their album "Birth of A Firefly" and it's a store you can listen to the discs before buying them, I suggest giving that a try to see if you like it.

Going harder than that, I love Nothingface, moreso the "Skeletons" album than the rest. "Violence" was a good one too.

Both of the above bands make a mix of actual singing and the normal metal type sound you get from the singer, which is something I try to find in the music I go for.

If your looking for mellower bands, another route could be Incubus. I'm not overly fond of a lot of their stuff, but their older album "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." was pretty good. It's definately less pop type music than the new stuff, but something of a love it or hate it type thing for most people.

Aggressive, hardcore style stuff...Motograter. I saw the guys in concert and they put on a wicked show. As far as I know they only have a self-titled album out produced within the last two years or so.

Mudvayne is interesting, two of the band members are just brilliant and put thought into their music, but it's definately another aggressive style band.

Nonpoint is a band of hispanic guys doing metal with a sort of rap twist to it. I'm not sure if your into that kind of thing, but I found their "Statement" album nice to listen to sometimes.

Spineshank is one of my favorites. Aggressive music, the singer has an interesting choice of lyrics IMO.

Flaw, another of my favorites. The lead singer can actually sing and does so throughout their CD's in the midst of his screaming and rants. Highly recommended. I prefer the first cd "Through the Eyes" over the newer "Endangered Species" album, they changed the band line up between the two and it shows in style.

Vision of Disorder is a band that grew on me, mostly their newer album "From Bliss to Oblivion". The lead singer is one who's used his music to express his trouble of his coke addiction, so a lot of his stuff deals with that. Good music though IMO.

STP, Stone Temple Pilots, is older stuff (somewhat) that I really don't have any of but I've been meaning to get some.

Alice in Chains is good too, old school grunge.

Deftones possibly, they do an interesting range of music throughout their span of albums.

Hope that helps.

I have a perfect circle. They are damn good as is tool. Crystal Method has a techno feel to it i agree, but most european metal does welll. Thanks alot. iw ill look at all those bands.

The music i listen to includes stuff like AC DC, Pantera, Metallica, AeroSmith, Ted Nugent Megadeath, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, Manowar, Motorhead etc. Oh yeah softer stuff includes Damn Yankees, Warrant, White Snake Steppenwolf etc.

Most of the new music, i like theory of a deadman, 3 doors down. Puddle of Mudd etc.
