I'm in the middle of chapter 2 of NWN and over the course of my adventure i found many little "jewels" items (aventurine, malachite, phenalope, amethyst, fire agate, etc....) and i'm just wonder what those are for? I read one of the sticky about some smith will "combine" some of these items into weapons to make new items. Is this what the "jewels" are for? and which one should i keep and which one should i sell?
I also found few others items like bodalc's tooth, slaad's toung, etc.... just wondering if these are "key" items for the game? also how do i know which items i need to keep and which item i can get rid?
finally i found that there are lots of potions in the game, are these potions just temporaly boost stats? are there any potions that will boost stats permanently?
thanks.
questions about few items in the game
The only gem you can use at a smith is diamond. In Chapter 3, at the settlement you start in, there is a smith who can use diamonds, along with adamantine, dragon's blood, fairy dust, gargoyle skulls and special holy water along with a magically enhanced weapon to create special weapons and armor - some very very nice items, but at a very hefty cost. You missed out slightly in Chapter 1, because he makes lesser items at a very low cost, and you could make a lot of profit. In Chapter 3, only get what you really want for your character!
Other gems may as well be sold. About now you should be finding more Topaz and other more valuable gems, maybe even a few emeralds and rubies, so you can make a reasonable sum out of gems.
Bodak's toothes, Slaad's tongues, etc are useful if you are a spellcaster I believe, and can combine these items with certain spells to create wands, potions, etc.
Potions are there only to temporarily boost stats. I used them only rarely, and I would advise you to keep them all until you are desperate in a tough fight, because they will be much more useful later in the game.

Highlight these, I'm not sure which one you meant and I don't want to give it all away!
Chapter 1 Smith can be found: at the Shining Knights and Armor shop, ask the shopkeeper about his premium items or something like that, and he will give you a key to the basement room where Marok the dwarven smith manufactures special weaponry. I believe he charges around 500 GP for each item.
Chapter 3 Smith can be found: at Beorunna's Well, at the Trading Post. Not so hidden this time, he is in the same room as the shop keeper. Charges 20,000-30,000 for each item, but they are some of the finest weapons in the game.

Don't think so, its just generally a bit more challenging.
Tips on getting money.... opening every chest or barrel you can find, killing every enemy you can find, doing all the quests you can.
Now with GP, don't search for the obvious. Unless its "reward chests", the sort you find hoarded by harder characters, you're not going to find more than 100GP at a time really. Occasionally, but not so often.
What you are going to find is higher and higher level equipment, potions, and scrolls. You should find several things like special greatswords, which sell for several thousands, magically enhanced weapons and armor (lots of armor really, and it all sells for a reasonable pirce), if you're a not a spellcaster, sell all the scrolls you have, and if you are sell all the ones you cannot use! Things like potions of lore can just go if you don't use them.
Between that and quest rewards, you should make plenty of money. Even items you receive from quests can be sold for something you'd rather spend it on! Don't look for money, look for "assets" - things that you can sell for plenty of cash. I always had loads and loads of jewellry that I simply could not fit on my fingers and had no purpose for. Like things that were a level below what I was using, or didn't add anything that another ring or amulet could. You should have plenty of this.
Like I said before, about this time you should be getting the more valuable gems (late Chap2, Chap3 kind of time). All the other gem's you have been getting have been pretty worthless, but now even the lower level gems for you character (topaz, etc) are worth 100GP more or less at least.
