You can leave the dungeons and come back to them anytime you want, but once you're back on the surface (Underdark Exit, Elven Camp), there's no going back.

I do know that you can re-enter the antechamber of the Underdark - why not the lower reaches? Chateau Irenicus, the spellhold area & the Sahaugin city are the only ones you can't go back to, AFAIK.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.
I'm pretty sure you can come back into the underdark after you've left and do any of those 3 quests outside of the Drow city.
Not so. I attempted that once, and found out that only the antechamber was available to you.

Check it out yourself. You won't be able to return to either the main Underdark chamber, or the three side quest areas.

Just so you know, it *is* possible, and you don't even have to cheat. I left the Underdark (after having done every quest and raided every 'dungeon' in there), got interrogated by Elhan, dropped by Athkatla and returned. And not just to the ante-chambers, but the Underdark proper. Even went to have a chat with some deep-gnomes.
And if you were wondering, no, I did not cheat, nor am I using any mods.

Can't see how you did it, then, provided you ran no mods and had the requisite patches. There was a thread about this also up on the Bioware boards a number of years ago, and the consensus (confirmed by the developers) was that they deliberated made the area impossible to return to, later. They wanted people to feel as though the Underdark was a mission, while they were inevitably drawn back to finish things in the main city.

I also went back, but that was because one of my people had been imprisoned in the beholder dungeon. I found a Freedom scroll from a Cowlie, and came back.
But then, my game has been buggy in other things, maybe this is just a happy bug?
I returned too... because I was looking for Solaufein (I told him to "Wait me here"). I just came back at the entrance of the Drow City, grabbed him, and head back to the surface. This was after the interrogation of the Elf.
. . .Fable is right. . .not possible unless you CLUA'd.
I haven't used the CLUA, ever. Period. And I *was* able to get back to Underdark. I tried again after having killed Bohdi and all, right before I gave the Lanthorn to Elhan. Still no problem at all.

I have checked yesterday. You *can* go back to the Underdark main area, as well as the Kuo-Toa and Beholder area, probably the illithid city, too, but I didn't try that. I suspect that you cannot go back into Ust'Natha.
