A while ago, I borrowed Neverwinter Nights from a friend. I played the game and finished it. Now, I've bought the deluxe edition, and I would like to continue playing with my first character. Will that savegame work with my new Neverwinter Nights cds, seeing they'll have a different serial number and all?
Thanks!

Well, in any case you will be able to use your old character (if you have exported/saved him back then, that is). That is a given.
If you only have the savegames, things -should- work out fine, too - the only question is wether or not your current NWN will recognize any savegames that it hasn't indexed itself. Chances are pretty good though, as most savegame systems today are fully modular... afair, there are even nwn savegames to download in the web (which would be useless otherwise), so it should work.
Still, two things remain to be said:
a) if you plan on playing the included expansions ( SoU and HotU ) with your old chara... well, you can do that. But SoU is devised for being started with a fresh level1 character, so the high-level chara that you still have from the NWN maingame will be ridiculously uber - and the game won't be any challenge. As for HotU, it's the story-sequel to SoU and is meant to be played with the new chara that you made for SoU.
Generally speaking, SoU and HotU tell an (almost) entirely separate story, so re-using your old chara is even a "bad" idea plot-wise. Without spoiling much, you will re-encounter one or two NPCs from the maingame, and they will -not- recognize you. (...sure, since you're actually someone else)
b) your old character will lack all the cool new features that the expansions have brought into the game (more classes, feats, spells, skills etc). Since back when you developed him, you never had the choice to invest in those new features, meaning he will most likely be sub-par to whatever you would create -now-.
One way to do it is this: play SoU with a fresh chara, so the challenge feels right, then maybe play HotU with your NWN chara. HotU is pretty playable with a mainchara - just keep in mind, that it basically continues the story from SoU, so the story and people will always treat you like you are the SoU-hero.
