Fighter/Thiefs

Post by Krede »

I just started playing bgate 1 again and I want to know when it is best to duel your fighter into a thief, like when you get the most bonuses or thief levels so you have the best possible class for bgate 2.

I waited until I imported my fighter into BGII.... Now I have a thief with 120+ hit points, 5 proficiency in two-handed sword, etc.

Thief backstabbing with two-handed sword ?
I would prefer a smaller and faster weapon for that combination ...

Mikel: Why do you need a fast sword , when the foe isnt knowing that you are attacking ?

You can't backstabb with two-handed sword. It still gives really good damge, but using a small sword and having a multiply factor of 4 or 5 for backstabbing IS better (Have a look at a thread which deals with biggest damage)
And if the thief is noticed in his attempt, it's a good idea to have a weapon with a good speed factor (initiative). Then you still have a good chance of hitting first.

Don't you think its better to begin BG1 as a thief the dual to a fighter? Thieves max out pretty quickly and a fighter can continue to add big HP and fast weapon profs.

Level 5 gives you x3 backstab and 3 extra weapons profs. But you need all the extra items that increase skills.

Level 8 gives you 4 extra weapon profs and a decent set of skills.

Some of it depends on which kit you're gonna take as a thief (no of traps available per day etc.). Plus you don't get a kit for your fighter. Image

I dual classed my thief to a fighter at level 10. I have 100% in three theif skills and the 160.000 xp that it took for me to get to lvl 10 won't stop me from becoming a max level fighter. Allright, it would be good to backstab for dmg x5, but x4 is still devastating.

*IF* your CON is 18, you get +4 hp / lvl when andvancing as fighter. A thief only gets +2.

This means you waste nearly 20 hp max when you start as thief with con 18 and switch to fighter at lvl 10.

You can use the abilities of the former class only if you reach in the new class a higher level. If you would start as fighter and later switch to thief, then you will really fast get your thief in a high level and you can use all abilities of the fighter (mostly his spezialisation and good thac0)
If you start as a thief and later switch to fighter, you need a lot of xp to reach the old thief level.

But you don't get HP when you advance in a second class till you overtake the first.
