Can anybody explain to me what BBY means after the date? is that a prevalent term in star wars that I just...missed?

Yeah, Before Battle of Yavin is my guess, too. That's interesting, that the story sort of puts a Christ-like spin on Luke as the savior of the galaxy who brought back the followers of the Force. Just one of the many philisophical elements GL put into creating the concepts for Star Wars.
Blackheart ------- the future is now.
Very true. Perhaps it also interesting then to note there is no real dating system in SW, at least not a consistent one. Even inside the key eras of the SW universe there is no particular central calendar. Of course it depends on the world, but you would have thought the Republic would have a center (Coruscant probably) around which all times and dates were based, yet the only way of dating things is based around key events in history.
Kind of saves continuity problems caused by settings in stone specific dates, but I guess it gives it that sense of being in that story at that point in a history (even a completely made-up one), without being tied to a concept of old and new, past and present.
