What's the problem with the past tense of "buy"?
Hah! I read it as 'brought' and thought to myself:
"Wait, you can't say 'I had better brought', that would be incorrect. The present tense of the second verb should be used instead"
What I should have thought was:
"Wait, you can't say 'I had better bought', that would be incorrect. The present tense of the second verb should be used instead"
Then I should have said:
"buy
"
I edited my original post so that it makes (more) sense.
In reality, I was just looking for an excuse to use the eng101 smiley. Please forgive me
edit: What, another animal? The heathens are quickly becoming zoo-keepers

Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak
Ohhhh!
Do we get to keep the shark?? I'll train him! We can call him Ed!
What's with all the pets all of a sudden? For once, I find myself agreeing w/Vicsun...oooh dear. This isn't good.

I sincerely wish we could re-consider this plan from a perspective that involved pants.

I have no idea what you are saying here but my English is always gramatically correct sir.

Well that's just wrong.
I had better buy indicates that I will do it in the future.
Example: I upset Brynn and she lets me know this. At that moment I think to myself; "I had better (go) buy her some flowers." --> To resolve this situation and thus I go to buy flowers in the future.
"I had better bought her flowers then" Indicates something I had better done instead of what I did.
Example: I bought Brynn a goldfish but she doesn't like it. Later I hear that she likes flowers. So I think to myself; "I had better bought her flowers then". --> I realise afterwards that flowers would have been a better choice then a goldfish.
Just an example naturally. I know you like Beatrix Brynn.
