To anyone:
I'm trying to see how well my system can run NWN with just integrated video. I noticed on other posts that some people were able to get the game to run, albeit slowly, with Intel integrated video. I downloaded the demo (a pain with dial-up) and it loads fine up until after character selection/creation. Then the game loads (you can see the character and the environment) and promptly the application quits out.
The following is a list of my system specs. If anyone can help me figure out either 1) how to get the demo working or 2) whether or not the actual game would behave differently, I would appreciate it a great deal.
OS: Win XP Pro
Manufacturer: Dell (circa 2002)
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel Celeron 1.70Ghz
Memory: 510MB
DirectX: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Video: Intel 82845G Graphics Controller
Approximate Video Memory: 64.0MB
Sound: SoundMAX Digital Audio
I'm not trying to get blazing or even good performance. I would just like to be able to PLAY at all (so I can see if I like it, etc). Thanks in advance!
running with integrated video
I can't really say why you can't run the demo, but according to the systemrequierments you do fulfill them.
The requierments as listed in the gamemanual (for the original NwN) are amongst other things:
P2 300mHz
96 MB RAM
16 MB 3D gfx card
which is in my view grossly understated.
HotU expansion requierments are somewhat higher at:
800 mHz CPU
256 RAM under win XP
32 RAM gfx card.
Which still seems low compared to how I experience the game.
I would think you should at least be able to play the game, however - not being able to get the demo to run indicates some problem - and I would think it could be the graphics card or a 3rd party application which affects the game.
Have you been able to run other 3D games on the computer, and do you run any sort of antivirus?

Thanks for the response. To answer your question, I'm one of those "rigorously paranoid" users when it comes to installing apps of any kind or even letting others use the system. So I very carefully screen any installations and go through my system regularly to check for "digital weeds" and on the rare occasion I let someone use it unattended, I have user accounts set up with restricted permissions.
As for other games, on this configuration, I've been able to run oldies such as Quake III, Baldur's Gate II, Diablo II, etc. Depending on the settings, the aforementioned games actually run quite well and with decent quality.
Any other thoughts??

I really don't think that playing NWN on integrated graphics is reasonably possible.
My specs:
P4 3.2 HT
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
1024 MB RAM
And yet it STILL lags in places (albiet on 1024 x 768, max everyting, no AA/AF).

"Heya! Have you been to Baldur's Gate? I've been to Baldur's Gate... Oops, stepped into something. Have you stepped into something?"
antivirus
Yes, I have Norton installed. Sorry, I missed answering that one directly and thought it'd be pretty self-evident. Anyway, Norton is on auto-protect at a moderate setting and I run full system scans twice a week during the night. Have you had specific experiences with a virus causing the problem I described?

I guess Xandax is not referring to a virus causing the problem but to Norton Antivirus itself. Some antivir programs that are running virus scans in the background interfere with games and cause them to crash, so you should try to disable them before ypu start NWN.
Also you should check if your video drivers are up to date.

There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen and guys that mumble.

Try entering Norton Antivirus settings and disableing AutoProtect.
(Dosen't do much towards virus protection).
I have experience from myself that the Autoprotect feature crashes my games.
(So it is as Numinor said).
However - I have no problems running games with Norton as long as autoprotect is disabled.
