Everyone's Dead, what to do??

Post by faruz »

Hi All,

I have a problem with my party.
They stepped into a fight with a Beholder that just killed them all within 3-4 rounds (2 were disintigrated, 2 became stone and 2 just had a bad visit from a Finger of Death).

Anyway, we agreed to do a "Load" to before the party entered the room.

Was there another way to handle it?

Or you could have gone to a parallel universe where everything's the same except the party didn't die, but the method is good.

You could also work out an in-game save.
Some drow passed by, killed the beholder and took you with you as slaves... if you hadn't been desintegrated.
Perhaps another high level party passed by, or even Elminster.
Guinness is good for you.
Gives you strength.

ONe save that I like is that a spellcaster raises you (tough luck with disintegrate though) and requires you to do a quest.. IN the middle of that quest you get linked back into the quest you were working on.

A Wish will get back the Disintegrated PCs, so a (very) high level Mage is also a possibility. Or divine intervention of course. That would work if one of the PCs was a Paladin or Cleric with a destiny requiring fulfilment or something along those lines.

Although personally I'd just say "well, how about that. New character time, guys!" :D

RE: Death is part of the game

Role up a new party it happens sometimes, the risk of adventurers is death the rewards are power, glory, fame and wealth.

The risk of dying is what makes it adventurous if your party just breezed through every challenge you set against them then it would be boring.

That being said maybe the beholder was a little tough for them did you give them the option/chance to avoid the fight ? If not then you learned that putting your players against impossible situations will have bad results i.e having to role up an entire new party. If it is their fault then they learned not to mess with beholders yet.

Either way think of it as an oppurtunity to let them try something new. I never feel bad about losing a character. It is a chance to play a new character.

Just last night this happened to me any my party. We all died by a shugenja (Oriental Adventures) casting a spell called Wall Of Fire (or something close to it) we sat in the room and thought quickly ( we had a time limit) and we thought of an idea. One of our characters ( me infact) had prayed to her godess every day to get her spells back. so her godess reserected her. she was alive and could finish the guy off. or in my case, my husband gave her a potion to restore 20 hp. she gave it to a stonger character and they finished the guy off together. its dificult and has to be planed out for it to work maybe a fall safe so they dont die. but i believe that it is more fun to have your characters survive to tell another tale then to have them die and be gone forever....

A hopefully helpful player and Dm

Smack your GM for getting you a mob that was obviously way beyond what you could beat and make a new party.
(I agree dead is dead it's not exactly fun if you know that divine intervention will happen every single time the party dies)

It's not necessarily the GMs fault... I know I've thrown in encounters where the PCs had to *talk* not *fight* and the players went "Let's attack!" I felt no guilt for killing them all at that point. Especially after pointing out that they were in a "combat-bad!" situation.
