Read a novel by David Gemmel called Legend, this covers the problems of seiges surprisingly well.

Although mages will play a pretty deciding factor, it will not be through sheer numbers. If you read the novel Cormyr (I think), the army had something like 300 mages. This army of mages most powerful offensive was a barrage of lightning bolts and fireballs. You have to remember how ridiculusly(sp i know) hard it is to become a high lvl mage like in Bg2 and ToB. You must keep in mind that your normal character is a hero, an awesome power. I remember when I first started playing Dnd how I looked in awe at the days when I could cast the mighty fireball spell.

In a straight fight between BG and Amn, whichever side you were on would win. I mean, you can beat everyone in both of the games, you can rip it up on about 50 soldiers with a few well-placed cloudkills (what level was a Flaming Fist again? I hope they have more than 4+1 Hit Dice). And remember, if something goes wrong, you can always reload
