Scatha and Fragarach cause game freeze - help!

Post by Mr_Phil »

Whenever one of my chaotic good character wielding Scatha or Fragarach gets hit, an attack of opportunity is triggered. The beast in question takes the damage. Irrespective of whether that kills it or not, the game then freezes. I have mouse control, and can zoom about the map. I can hover over avatars for the pop-up stats info, but I cannot access any character inventories or radial menus (because its not my turn).

Any ideas why this is happening or how I can stop it.

I have installed the official patch and the CO8.

I am at the point of packaging up this game and giving it away - this issue makes it unplayable.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Phil.

.

are you in the nodes ?

...especially in the fire node ?

...this is a known problem - don't know if there is a solution already !

...but if you wait for one or two minutes (or longer if you have a slow PC) the game should unfreeze...

Its happening all over the place. Although I don't notice it so much with the weaker monsters, since they don't hit my character as much.
Maybe my machine isn't up to spec; I had to turn off all the funky graphics options otherwise the fire node was impossible to do anything with.
I have given the game a chance to sort itself out, but only long enough to go get a cup of tea. I'll try leaving it a little longer and see if that helps.

I'm still thinking that the delay may make it unplayable, but it'd be good to have a solution.

Thanks for the info.

I only had this problem in the nodes - but I've a fast PC....

...so try to turn off all effects and use the lowest resolution!

btw. have a look @ Galufs post if you have installed the latest patches - but don't know if the 2nd one helps...

I have found the same problem, not too sure what it stems from. I have a reletively quick computer, Athlon XP 3000+ oc'ed and 1G of 400Mhz DDR on an asus mobo. Sometimes the game hangs for a bit, but other times it just plain gets stuck. Only occurs when there is an attack of opportunity for the character wielding fragarach and scatha. I am running official patch 2 and Co8 as well. I noticed that if the character is wielding fragarach and another weapon besides scatha, the game hangs after an AoO but doesn't get frozen. Weird...

For any parts that seem to hang when wielding those weapons you will need to arm yourself with a different weapon for those parts. That is what I did there are several weapons that will do nicely in a crunch. The blacksmith in Hommlett sells some nice masterwork weapons that should do you fine.

I concur in spades. If you're at the point of packing up the game, it's certainly a better option to just not use those two swords. In fact, I personally never use them, even though I don't have this problem. I find a cleaver with a bunch of fire/frost/shock thrown on is just more effective anyway. The counterattack thing is nice, but hardly something I miss too much. My current party has a guy with the magic spiked chain from the groaning spirit's room, a guy with a cleaver and shield, a monk with two cleavers, a cleric with a mace and a wizard. I chop down just about everything with no problems. IMO, S and F are overrated.

(Use the lastest 1.3 build - it's still beta, but stable and far better than 1.2)
