Great Weapons nobody ever used?

Post by KaaH »

Most of the time playing I focus on meelee (reducing rests, I always imagine my alter ego is hard pressed to fulfil his destiny, regaining ones soul seems to be a good reason to be in a hurry), magic is mostly used to enhance protection (if need be) and dispelling those pesky enemy mages.
How does this correspond to the title?
The best defence is a good (superb) offence, so the best damaging weapon suits the job!?
No I say! The best weapons are those, which slay on hit.

This is all theory, so I ask every one out there to give comments. Don't be shy of spoilers, I want to know everything (where to find, component of a mod, BG1, BG2, ToB (sorry to the moderators, but I feel the line is blurred already and as the game is real old, should do so).

Undead is easiest, e.g. MoD but maybe some pro (or not) can come up with something more.

With a tendancy to play as a backstabbing only person there is nothing nicer than the Daystar or Short Sword of Backstabbing. Despite all it's worth and special abilities the Celestial Fury is now easily a one of my most hated weapons due to the extremely pathetic damage it seems to do.

Even though it has a slower speed and lower enchantment the Daystar remains one of my favourite weapons of all time but sometimes exchanged for the Backstabber Sword at random intervals. Both weapons are ranked rather high on my lists of favourite weapons.

I imagine if I ever get around to it the Cutthroat +4 will be even nicer for my solo thief games.

Other weapons that I am particularly fond of are Lilarcor, Melf's Minute Meteors and the Tunigan +1

I never use celestial fury...but my characters have proficiancies other than katana. I'm actually thinking of giving jan katana when he gets his next proficiance...but I don't use him with melee weopons much anyway. I had given him the zerth blade just to hold for the extra spell...but everytime i used the crossbow....he lost the extra spells, so I dropped it.

I wonder if anyone uses that scimitar that is just for monks (from one fo teh special merchants)....since monks generally use hand to hand..except at low levels.

Improved Mace of Disruption -- auto-kills undead
Azure Edge Axe -- auto-kills undead, bought from the dude in the Copper Coronet after freeing the slaves, can only be used by good characters.
Silver Sword (two-handed)-- auto-kills baddies, components found in a fight after the underdark and from Saemon Havarian (you need to take his boat after Spellhold to get it). Cromwell builds it for you.
Improved Axe of the Unyeilding -- Auto-kills baddies. I can't remember how to make this, but it's in ToB.
Crom Faeyr -- Components all over, I can't remember off-hand where they are. It auto-kills ettins, trolls, and a lot of golems.
There's also a staff bought in the underdark that auto-kills Golems; I can't remember it's name.

The top three most powerful weapons, based on enchantment, are:
Staff of the Ram +6
The Ravager (+6 halberd)
Carsomyr +6

Those three can punch through improved mantle, so have to be considered.

It may seem strange, but I've only once taken proficiencies in 2-handed swords, and never through a full game with halberds. I've also never played with a paladin, so apparently I'm missing out. :)

sorry to intervene, no pun intended

My idea was to bring some (additional) power back to the (boring, say: meat shield) Fighter so I wanted to know about weapons which slay on hit
(general, race or profession) aka one hit killer, as you can have up to 5 (including offhand, using one handed weapons) ready to suit the situation.

General so far:
Axe of Unyielding (10% ?)
Ravager Halberd (10% no save?)
Silver Sword (25% !, But save or else)

Undead:
MOD (+1|+2)
Azuredge (+4 with mod)
Undead Slayer (mod)
Rune Hammer

Level dependant
every weapon -> Death Blow (10th Lvl)
-"- Gr. Death Blow (Lvl 12) -> talk about killing Mindflayer easily
Rolfs Sureblade Lvl 18 (mod)

elementals:
Staff of elemantal mastery +5 (Mod: combine Saff of Earth/Fire/Air (100%))

Outsider:
Three White Doves (5%) (mod??/bonus merchant?? -> ToB final or Ascension anyone?)

Bards:
forgot the name but is there

Ogre:
Goblins:

Constructs:
(Staff) Rod of Striking?

Troll, Oger:
Crom Faeyr

more, more I command, I need, I beg

pleeeeeease

Well...

Bleh, weapons with vorpal/insta-death effects are ok, but -with the exception of the cheesy ranged Azuredge attach to gank liches - they never work on any bosses worth mentioning, and vaporizing rabble is hardly that impressive.
WARNING: the following is my idosyncratic opinion. You don't like it? too bad ;)

Obviously, the Item Upgrades and Underrepresented Weapons mods skew this a fair bit.

Anyway, some underrated base game weapons (IMAO):
The impaler spear - It puts out mucho damage. Unfortunately, it's about the only really whizzo spear out there in the unmodded game, and you get it fairly late.
The Halberd Dragon's Breath - all those wonderful elemental effects punch through skins, etc. - just like the Flail of Ages. Unfortunately, you don't get it untill quite late, and there aren't a lot of other compelling polearms out there.
The Dwarven thrower - solves a whole lot of Golem problems for you. Of course, you have to have a dwarf in the party
Arbane's short sword - free action from an off-hander. Sweet.

MOD weapons:
Lolth's Cruel Sting - what a wonderful weapon! A reason to use short swords.
Bastard Sword of Chaos - Chaotic commands on a weapon? Great offhander.
Bloodbane (?) - that nasty poison throwing spear in the Red Badge encounter.
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

Belm +2 is pretty nice for increasing your number of attacks/round in SoA. My fighter/mage's number of attacks are 7/2 with Daystar main hand, Blade of Roses off-hand, but with Daystar/Belm +2, he gets 9 attacks in 2 rounds. He has 2 proficiencies in both scimitar and longsword, but I think his number of attacks were the same even when he had no proficiencies in scimitar. Belm +2 seems to be a nice weapon for the off-hand, whether you have proficiencies in scimitar or not.

But as for one hit, 1 kill weapons, I think that the only toughies that can be slain in 1 hit in SoA are golems. Rod of Smiting kills any golem with 1 hit, and Crom Faeyr kills stone golems, and clay golems (the ones that only blunt weapons work on) in one hit. I didn't use Crom F until my second run through of the game, but I had a cleric/ranger dual wielding it with the flail of ages and let me tell you... my party walked into one of the houses in Suldanesselar, there were like 5 clay golems there. I set my cleric/ranger, fighter/thief, and Minsc on them, and had Aerie casting a bless spell. Before Aerie could finish her bless spell, all 5 golems were dead. The cleric/ranger with crom F killed them all, I think. It was the one hit wonder.

If we're going into ToB remember that you can backstab with the staff of the ram....

And what is meant by "Great Weapons no one uses"? Plenty of people use these weapon combinations.

As Nephtu said vorpal weapons aren't that great, most give you a chance for save (though there is one that does not).

Finally keep in mind azure edge and mace of disruption does not auto-kill undead... it simply gives you chance of auto-killing. Though in BGII the chance is fairly high by ToB its not that great anymore.

Just for the record, in unmodded BG2 the Staff of Air does auto-kill air elementals.

"There is a 20% chance that the target must make a saving throw vs. death or die instantly". So a 20% chance to get the dice rolling, and pretty much anything that can last more than a couple of rounds against your party have good saves vs. death anyways. Somehow though, the Mace of Disruption and azuredge seem to kill vampires a lot for me. What is more important though, is that the improved mace of disruption protects against level drain, and level draining is the only way that vampires can beat you really... they suck in every other way, which is good, because I hate them.

Wave halberd slays fire elementals, efreeti and salamanders (no save);
Halberds are great weapon, often not well considered: only in SoA you have 3 magical halberds +4, 2 +3 and 1 +2 that does elemental dmg.; of those Dragon breath is great, it's true that you get it in the Underdark, but you still have a lot of road in front of you (depending how many quest you left in Athkalia); in ToB Ravager is a great weapon.
Also spears are good although not much considered: spear of withering +4 (poison dmg), Impaler +3 (super dmg), spear of the Unicorn +2 (immunity to hold and charm!!) and Alcyon +1 (elemental dmg) you can get very early, plus in ToB Ixil spike +6; all of that make for a good choice of weaponry (add to that the item upgrades mod that makes you spear throwable and the poisonous spear +5 fro the Red Badger encounter from Tactics).

A throwable spear? That's a great idea! It does seem amazing that there is even a throwable hammer in SoA, but not a throwable spear, as spears have often been hurled throughout our own history.

I agree, there is some good spears and halberds in SoA. The impaler does massive impaling damage. As for the wave halberd, what path you take through the game will decide whether you find the necessary parts to assemble it or not. I have wanted to try it out. I don't think that any of the NPCs have halberd skill though, so I would either have to give my PC halberd skill, or wait for an NPC tank to level up enough in order to get the necessary skill points. It's too bad that Minsc has 2 proficiencies in longbow, and nothing in 2-handed style, when he joins your party. His whole philosophy seems to be to take the biggest 2-handed sword he can find, and swing it like a madman... would think he would have some skill in 2-handed weapon style then (even though it seems a waste not to utilize his free ranger class proficiencies in 2-weapon style).

By the way, I think that Lilarcor is a decent weapon, gives immunity to charm and confusion. Those 2 spells seem to pose the biggest threat to my party, as my own tanks are usually much more powerful in melee than enemy monsters, and having them turn on me can be nasty.

Something interesting just happened to me in the underdark. My party was fighting that lich that you can release from that imprisonment machine, Alchra Diagott. He had cast protection from magical weapons upon himself, and Minsc and my PC were hacking away at him with azuredge and the mace of disruption. They weren't making any damage, but before Imoen could breach him, he died... just like that. So I guess the vorpal effect on undead works even through magical protections, even if they are immune to the damage, something like how the elemental damage of weapons gets through stoneskins.

I was just wondering, has anyone tried dual-wielding Kachico's Wakizashi and Belm +2? I was thinking that the Belm +2 would give more attacks per round with the Wakizashi, and you could possibly kill someone through wisdom drain that way. I'm not sure how well this would work, as the enemy can save vs. death to avoid wisdom loss (bummer), but I was wondering if anybody has tried.

Belm is +2 only, has speed 0 and additional attack per round (or 1/2, dont remember)...good as offhand but+2 enchantment does not work against adamantine golems, some demons and dragons...Underestimated weapons are all dragon slayers items (with longsword that gives 200% dmg to all dragons, with good strenght and critical hits u can kill dragon more quickly than speak: "dragons are too easy in Baldur's Gate 2 :P " I hate snares that is why I use this weapon. Most of archers proficient with short bows but there are some good long bows in game, that is why I gave Gaisen Bow to Imoen and used Heartseeker (or something like that)...There is some helbard in Underdark with+4 enchantment and +1poison ,+1cold, +1fire, +1acid dmg (and think is good), also wave helbard is worth of having it.

The Short Sword of Mask, even in the base version, is one of the best weapons in the game, especially if used by a thief. The entangle effect is a killer. Besides that, you can get it from the start with ToB installed, which makes it the most powerful weapon you can get in the earlier parts of the game.

The Staff of Striking is a nice weapon, though the 25 charges are a pain. With an Assassin and the staff's innate +9 damage multiplier I imagine the damage you can do in a backstab would be unholy.

Dont know it for sure but backstab propably can be done only wiht: katana/scimitar/ninja-to/short sword/longsword/greatsword/dagger...perhaps helbard too (so only slashing weapons...all non-slashing at my thief displayed msg: improper weapon to backstab or something)

Shord Sword has 1D6 base damage. But Long Sword&scimitar have 1D8 base damage, kantana has 1D10 base damage. If you use them to backstab, you select kantana/Long Sword&scimitar/Shord Sword

You can backstab with any weapon a thief is normaly aloud to use: short/long swords, daggers, katana, scimitar/ninja to etc, clubs, staffs and .. stop!.
You can't backstab with great swords/halberds/spears/bastard swords etc, because a thief isn't can't use them.
