Opinion of game (Possible spoiler )

Post by Calidorn »

I have both Kotor games. First one, very acceptable and good to play. Done light and dark side.
Having waited for Kotor II to come out, I'm rather disappointed regarding the story line. It just seems to drag on when it comes to asking questions and stuff. Also you get to visit almost all the places you got to visit in Kotor I. I think I lost the plot after the Palace bit and just seem to be wandering around looking for something to do. Check in my journal and nothing seems relevant.

Probably some spoilers in here

I didn't like KOTOR2 as much as the first either. I think the first was better in virtually every way..

-KOTOR1 ran smoother, despite KOTOR2 looking basically exactly the same

-the story of KOTOR2, IMHO, is very lame. It starts off VERY slow, then about 8 hours into the game gets interesting, although very contrived, and then is just completely abandoned and thrown out the window with the games "ending", or lack thereof.

-I HATE the random items, the whole course of the game I had two normal lightsabers and about 6 million of those stupid short ones.. Besides, how much sense does it make to kill a dark Jedi who is wearing black robes and fighting with a full size red lightsaber, only to search him and get gray robes and a short purple lightsaber? I understand they wanted to give the game replay value, but what items you get from enemies and lockers has absolutely nothing to do with replay value. How about a branching story, better character development, or maybe *gasp* an ENDING?

-The characters in KOTOR2 are weak.. Kreia is just Palpatine with a woman's voice and long hair.. Atton is an annoying ripoff of Han Solo.. GO-TO is just plain stupid.. Bao-Dur has no story and an incredibly boring voice.. Mira could have been a cool character but goes nowhere.. Disciple is a moron.. Visas started off cool but then went nowhere.. And the worst ones were the two Sith lords.. Darth Cion with his "I'm so evil I hurt myself" routine, like that's never been done before, and Darth Nihilus (probably spelled that wrong) with the good 'ol "so evil that all he wants to do is kill everyone and everything despite having no motive other than being evil".. he's not even a character for God's sake, he never speaks! The only good characters were the ones from the original! The great thing about the original KOTOR was that all the secondary characters had sidequests that would reveal their background and make you understand them better, and this is mostly MIA in KOTOR2. And the voice acting, although good for a video game, pales in comparision to the great voice acting in the original.

I think KOTOR2 is a fine example of a video game gone wrong due to idiot management wanting the game to ship by a certain date. It could have been so, so much better. I don't understand why they didn't at least fix up the PC version, it's not like it was released before the Christmas sales rush. It doesn't even seem like they tested it much, it's extremely buggy. But whatever, it is a fun game nonetheless, but should have been so much better. I personally would rather wait 6 months longer and have it be a superior game than get it ASAP. Someone at LucasArts needs to understand this concept, but I doubt they will. They wanted to make the extra money and get it shipped as early as possible, and didn't care that it was an unfinished work. I wish someone in the entertainment industry still had some integrity.

Well, enough ranting by me.

It would have been nice if doors opened that they say do. In the first KOTOR the story went along as you went to the planets. You didn't have to drag it out of the characters. The whole influence thing is cool--- if it went somewhere! They would have been better if you influenced the alignment but didn't have to gain influence just to talk to people. It was better when you got new topics to discuss as you leveled up.

In the tomb on Korriban I had to do the Kreia part 3 times before the stupid doors unlocked. And we all paid how much for this game??? Maybe they'll fix the bugs on the PC version but I guess those of us with the XBOX version are doomed. Maybe they could re-release it when it's a complete game and not half a game!

Sadly, I have to agree with everything here.

I'm mostly playing it because its fun to chop people up... If you close your eyes and only focus on making a good main character its not "bad" but it could have been SO much more. The idea was good, but it looks like they got tired at the end or something.

Yeah there are some flaws but it is still fun to play, however I do rather miss the NPC quests, I just always thought that they expanded on the storylines and once you had completed them you got a sense of closure. Oh well.
Donkeys are aliens!

Argos contains the 'Laminated book of dreams', to catch the 'Tears of joy'.

Just finished the game and it seems to me that Obsidian went with the "more is better" philosophy: More upgrades, more weapons, more powers, bigger stats, higher levels, etc. Not a bad idea, but not enough. The game is a munchkin's wet dream, but all the items get a bit annoying and the random drops are just lame. Some stuff should be random, but this is way too much.

The influence system is a good concept, and works well early in the game, but later on there are hardly any methods to boost it, and the whhole thing drops out of sight.

The game is too damn easy. Except for a few solo NPC parts and some early battles, the rest is a cakwalk (cast speed, cast stasis, slash&maim, repeat in the next room)

Bugs, bugs, bugs. Most are conversation related. For instance, Visas had tons of options in my first conversation with her, but I needed more influence to unlock them. Later, when I talked to her again, those options weren't there anymore.... Also, characters not recognising your progress (this could also be due to bad/sloppy scripting)
Other bugs are with the interface. Game often ignores my input (I queue my main character's actions so the game can ignore them ond override them with an "attack" command). Not to mention the abysmal combat AI....

The story was good, up until the Jedi meeting on Dantooine. All those Jedi were glad to see you, they happily taught you all their special saber moves, and then suddenly decide to kill you. And to make matters worse, Kreia waltzes in and kills them with one force lightning.... From there on, the game goes down the poop chute.

Most NPCs were well concieved, but lacked development (except for Kreia and Handmaiden). In KOTOR1 this was achieved by individual character side quests. Here, you have to scrap together bits of info.

The game runs slower than KOTOR1 (which had a poorly optimised engine as it was), and I was honestly suprised at this. Obsidian did a big step backwards.

To sum it up, the game has great concepts and ideas, but more holes than a wheel of swiss cheese. It's a bit like your average political campaign: starts out promising, works great in the start, but fails to follow through. Obsidian has a lot more to learn, but at least they show some talent...
