Beastmaster's Pets

What kind of animals can be pets? I mean,
is it possible to have a wyvern or a panther as a pet, and do they advance during the game?

I take it that you never played as a beastmaster or even read the kit description?

The beastmaster is a quite ordinary ranger, aside from the fact that he or she can't use metal armour or weapons, that can learn the druids animal summoning spells. No companions or such at all. Just the ability to summon animals trough spells.

Actually, as a Beastmaster I am given the skill of summoning familiars, akin to the lvl 1 mage spell. Unfortunately there is a downside, if your familiar dies you lose 1 constitution point....permanently.
