Big fan of both...all in all, i think that Halo 1 is the better game, but Halo 2 has some superior characteristics. I do like FPS games...esp when they have a space/alien/save-the-world feel to them....thats why I adore Half Life 2 (hence the username), halo, and why i started my thread on area 51. they just draw me in for some reason.
Halo 1 still remains, IMO, the most revolutionary game of the FPS genre of all time.

Out of some morbid curiosity, how was Halo revolutionary? To me, it's always just seemed a fine tuned FPS, but nothing unique, or special about it.
The level design was weak, the story was typical (not to mention stole many components from other game's plots. See Gamesworkshop, Blizzard). The action itself was sluggish, AI was horrendous. The only thing about the game that was above par was the presentation. It was a beautiful game, but aside from that, I don't see how it raised the bar any. If anything, it sidled up nice and close to the bar, and hung out.

I disagree, first of all Halo's story was actually taken from Bungie's previous games, Myth and the Marathon series. The only outside sources is the "Halo" ring idea which was taken from a sci-fi novel and the Bible(Really.). I don't really see how Blizzard have insider information on Bungie studios, could all be speculations as far as I'm concerned. Sure they may compare Starcraft and all but if Bungie really did steal the components it would be a violation of copyright and Blizzard can sue them, did they? No. It's like comparing Final Fantasy to Panzer Dragoon, "They got dragons! They stole our idea!".
Halo's AI are advanced in some aspect compared with all the FPS before it, I mean most of the good AIs are in tactical shooter not general FPS. There is much difference between the two as tactical requires more stealth and strategy. What good AI is there? Even Counter-Strike: Condition Zero's Ai sucked badly. Battlefield AI? I can wipe the whole German Army out in Berlin before getting shot. What else... name it.
Level design was confusing no doubt, and the repetition of textures are annoying I guess.
Action was sluggish? If were any faster no one can finish legendary, we would all get annilated as soon as we see a Elite. What about other FPS, like CS the most popular online for example, sure, kill respawn, kill respawn keep running like a loop, pick up a gun and shoot. You mean sluggish as in slow? Check Conker out then. Or laggy even? Atleast it doesn't need to load between stages, it loads the whole level, it's a good price to pay than have to wait at a checkpoint waiting for it to load the next part.
Presentaion was average, they even had mistakes on every manual after release, check your picture for Plasma Rifle, don't tell me that was a misprint they should fix it. The picture showed a Needler been printed underneath the Plasma Rifle. Graphics wise, Halo 1 was horrible, Halo 2 ain't much better.
But I respect your opinion, you don't like Halo that's fine, no problem. I've been overseeing the development since 2001 so call me a fanboy but I'll defend Halo with reasons.
Man I wrote alot... first time out of the Fable forums, came to explore.

I don't think the criticism is that bungie nicked the whole backstory from somewhere else, it just tends towards the generic, rather than the revolutionary.
the AI wasn't awful - the enemies don't just charge on sight until you kill them - but running away is hardly the pinnacle of AI design. comparing it to condition zero's or battlefield's AI is a bit spurious, since both these were multiplayer games with some very basic bots slapped in to allow single-player gaming. the original half-life AI was pretty good compared to halo, and far cry has excellent enemies.
well, the sluggish thing probably applies to moving and shooting. because of the much lower precision of gamepads, most console FPSs have a more 'soft' feel to the controls. but I've played worse, and halo's controls work fine with experience.
basically, it's an above-average game with relatively good multiplayer - for a console game - and an incredible marketing campaign.

well, I've played many cheap console FPSs, and the average can be pretty low. I think 'unremarkable' would be a better way to put it. quite enjoyable when playing, but I don't recall thinking 'oh, halo did this much better' when playing something else. and I mainly like the multiplayer because I've played it quite a bit with friends. It's certainly not as good online, in my experience. I like it because it's great to mess around with vehicles and so on.

I think you are selling the series short. I like Halo 1 over Halo 2, but both are fun. There are a few things that made the series really spectacular*
*I am only talking about the console version- I've never played the computer based version
Now, on to the good stuff:
(1) The controls. The standard directional control setup was not exclusive to Halo, but it worked very well. The whole idea of carrying two (and only two) weapons changes the game. Also, the triggers- one for grenades, one for guns- were very well used. This plays into number two...
(2) Excellent physics/gameplay. Halo physics and gameplay were exceptionally well done. Granted you can definately fool the computer (walk through cliffs, etc.) if you try, but generally everything about the game is smooth. The characters run well, fall well, the grenades make sense, the weapons fire differently at ranges, etc. When playing the game you know that the physics of the game were well thought out.
(3) Excellent multiplayer. I disagree with previous multiplayer statements. I was in college when Halo 1 was really popular, and it was the game to play, especially if you wanted to take someone down a peg or hurt their ego- beating a friend down came with carte blanche bragging rights. This is possible because Halo was easy to learn and hard to master, leading to...
(4) Ease of use. Anyone who can handle the 3D aspect of first person shooters can learn Halo and be decent quickly. Anyone can pick it up and play and have fun. Even people who are awful can be put in a vehicle and taught to drive around. This is part of #5...
(5) Excellent equipment. Halo's vehicles are well done and fun to use- the all have strong and weak points. The guns are very well done too- this is more true of Halp 2 than Halo 1. In the first game, the pistol really ruled the roost so to speak. In the second however, there are so many potential combinations of weapons that everyone can develop what they like. (I make one exception per game to this: the ridiculously cheese-able covenant sword (Halo2) and the exasperating Rocket Launcher (Halo1). When playing multiplayer, those two weapons can be really aggrivating) The equipment also gets points for being original (new covenant weapons, and also the human/covenant weapon types)
Also important:
Great replay value
Fun look/graphics
I don't know if I would call Halo "revolutionary", but I would call it one of the Top 5 fps of all time. Great replay value, cool looking, great multiplayer, easy to hook up, and most important... fun fun fun. Maybe it isn't the Porsche or Lamborghini of fps, but I would definately call it the Cadillac.
