But on the other hand, he is the only NPC that can hire in the brothel.

I don't think he is. Imoen can, I'm fairly sure.

Maybe my memory is just going though Image

you don't know how to use anomen, i know he is annoying, but he became one of my tanks, beside minsc and my pc. with mace of disruption +2, he rules all the undead cos i gave him grand master of mace Image Image and he could fight very very good and cast cleric spell for me, which viconia can't fight. but i don't know why my jaheria was the most useless NPC in my party, i say in my party guys, (althought she is quite good), i never runs out of cleric spells, cos only imoean can't use cleric spell which is nice., and with anomen casting animate dead, 5 selekon warriors with magic protected, or some invisable instaler or elements, which killed a lot of enemies for me

Anomen doesn't suck in fighting, i agree with the annoying bit however, thus i just switched off the speakers.

minsc is very very cool, very funny.

cornd is pretty useless, cos we got jaheria, cos jaheria is multi-classed, she is a fighter as well, thus she can use better armor, which cornd couldn't.

i dropped nalia cos i want imoen, but she is ok la, not as bad as you guys say.

yoshimo is the stupid one who betrays us, i just want someone with me to get out of the prison, once i see the daylight, i've dropped him

I think that Anomen is the most useless character - he's the most stupid dialogues in the game.
What is more, I usually play clerics (single, multiclass) (gate spell rules). In addition, I have Aerie in my party, so there is no need of cleric abilities.

Edwin is very funny mage (with Minsc in party)

Maybe one more thing, Nalia should be added to my list - I hate her speaking about "helping other people blah, blah.....".

if you play single cleric, keldorn is what you need. but i played paladin, thus i need a cleric, and anomen is a lot better than aerie (if you don't count the mage skills).

As for me, i dearly love both Ariel and Nalia. BTW, Nalia is my archer, too. The more important it is when you have arrows of dispelling. Also as a mage she is worth enough. Since i try to keep my rep on max, there is no use of Edwin for me. Ariel is just the best combo i've met. Cool cleric spells plus mage. If the intellect might be higher... BTW, there is no Tomes in the game, what a shame. I would prefer the racial attribute caps, if there might be the way to raise attributes for my party members.

Since it is RPG, my lawful good protagonist hates to dismiss members of my party, the exception is Yoshimo to do the Jan's quest. Anyway, Yoshimo in not the one to be trusted, and, from other side, he always willingly rejoins (why, i wonder Image ).
The most annoying, IMHO, is Minisc (i got rid of him as early as i could in BG I). I endure him now only because 1)you cannot get another tank early in the game; 2) during Jan's quest or after losing Yoshimo it is only scout available; 3) how may i leave him alone in alien land after all battles we've fought together! Well, i'm sure i have to because i need the slot for some quest NPC anyway, but, when there is such a need, the newcomers are at the levels i should have to reconsider if i shouldn't pick up Minisc again after the task is done.
If serious, BG I had much more choices and more characters. For one thing there is only one true and multipurpose enough (traps + shadows) thief, and even he is only in the first part of the game!
All the same, the only mage to hire is Edwin, evil, i've killed him in BG I at once, how can i endure him in the party with 20 rep? And there never is a match for Branwen!
If i add the freedom to move and explore in BG I, IMHO, BG II is the step back or aside somewhere. Still a great game and great sequel nonetheless.

Just my 2g,
L.

I think just about every one of the16 NPC's has advantages in the right kind of party. Anomen, while he sounds like an arrogant prick, is the ideal cleric for casting a few support spells and charging into melee. Nalia, combined with Imoen make a great 1 2 punch - who cares if they're virtually the same character? Aerie is quite useful with her combination of different spells, so she's a sort of Swiss army knife in that respect. Edwin rocks given his extra spells, so does Viconia for that matter.

The only character that seems to be uniformly useless is Haer'Dalis. As cool as he sounds - dual-wielding, half-tanar'ri Doomguard - he really doesn't excel in any one particular area to make him immediately appealing. Weak fighter, crappy excuse for a thief, pansy-ass mage... I don't know what he would be like of you spent the time to level him up, but...

Most stupid character in my mind? Irenicus. I can't believe that he simply didn't kill me after taking my soul. No, he lets a subordinate, Bodhi, do that job, and she decides to play with Mr. Slayer. Irenicus could have acheived his goals and raised himself above the gods were it not for his confident reliance on others. Sure, he doesn't want to give the game away until he's finished playing, but as soon as any villain gets feeling smug and ****y, the game's over before it even begins.

I personely think Haer'Dalis is one of the best characters there is. I think you shoud spent some time leveling him up until you have can cast tensers minor transformation and some other good protective mage spells. in my party he is now level 22 so when using the transformation he gets a TACO of a level 22 fighter and a +2 to hit and damage.

I also like arie she is a little week but she is a nice backup mage/cleric and with the staff of magi she even has a good fighting change. minor meteors works fine too.

I would go for Nalia as the most annoying/stupid character. I also found Jaheira's assessment of her to be accurate. In my original game (got accidentally deleted) I had Nalia with me in Spellhold/Underdark. Given that you are are not the most mobile during those chapters, her constant whine, --''how are we helping the less fortunate trudging around down here"-- almost inspired me into throttling her. Personally, I find that the mages in this game are not that great (I miss Dynahair from BG1), so upon restarting I created my very own fighter/mage. I got really lucky when rolling my numbers (18/56, 18, 18, 18, 15, 11). Combined with elven chainmail (you can get some early on at Trademeet), the bracers of defence ac 3, and a good shield....she just kicks ass.

Dragon wench, why do you need elven chain mail when you also have bracers AC3. Wouldn't you be better off with the robe of vecna?

I have nothing against the npc's except cernd, haer'dalis, and anomen. Nalia isn't that annoying (anyway, who'll keep her after getting Imoen). Aerie is annoy at times, but her fights with Viconia and Jaheira make up for it. She is a damn good spell caster, too. Minsc is really annoying, but one of the most powerful. And who thinks the Beholder in Saughin City sucks?????? I thought he was the best.

Grunt Boy, I have yet to acquire the robe of Vecna. Although I've also heard that this item is only available in the spiffy edition. If that is the case I'm SOL, because I just have the standard edition. But yes, I'd like to pick it up if I can, then when I collect Imoen I can pass the chain onto her.

to me , there are no worst characters, but nalia is annoying. i've only played the game once so far with a bard. now whoever says that mincs is the most annoying npc needs a good swift kick in the behind. frankly i adore the bugger. his lines are funny and give him the boots of speed and the vorpal blade and let him play with evil.
edwin is pretty cool, too bad his evil and gets his but kick by mincs.
oh and anomen has the most annoying voice, i like him and feel for him but i think dwight schultz would do better if it was funny.

@Dragon Wench, you can download the bonus merchants here. That's all it takes.

Since the bracers give you better AC than the chainmail, you may as well wear the robe (which reduces casting times!). :)

Nice name BTW.

I can't believe people saying that Anomen sucks as a fighter. Have you even tried him out? He starts with a THAC0 of a level 8 fighter. Thereafter, he gets the cleric's THAC0, the second best after the fighter's. His strenght is one of the better in the game and can be further improved with a girdle of strenght. Add to this all the cleric spells intended to enhance the cleric's fighting skill. Only use blunt weapons? Sure, but some of the best weapons in the game are blunt (Crom Fayer, FoA, Sling of E). The only item really needed to make Anomen a great fighter is the Gauntlets of Dex, easily obtained at an early start in the game if you buy the Shield of Balduran (which you want for the Beholders in Underdark anyway). Anything more to add? Well, Anomen single-handedly takes care of Undead at a higher level. Blasts vampires to oblivion in mere seconds... In short, I would say, and seriously now, that Anomen is one of the best NPCs you could keep in your party. I have often used him as my main fighter and he's been outstanding. I don't even find him annoying anymore, I rather like his braggy attitude. On the other hand, this comes from a guy who, besides Anomen, adore Nalia, Cernd, Jan and Haer'Dalis. We may seem weak at first sight, but beware... or be slaughtered! :D

Glad you like the handle, I was sitting in front of the registration form for a good while (almost as long as trying to choice a name for my character) and this suddenly popped into my head, so I thought, why not?thanks, again :D

Most useless character? Ribald. Any store owner who hires guards yet is stupid enough as to keep a regeneration ring in his pocket deserves to be mooned by a dragon, IMO.

Oh, you mean hireable characters? ;) Nalia. She's redundant no matter which way you turn. Jan offers far better thieving capabilities. There's no comparison with Edwin for a mage, if you run an evil party, and no comparison with Imoen, if you run a good one. Just my POV.
