The best class?

Post by Carrot »

What is in your opinion the best class. Any opinion is welcome. I am trying to think what class to be and I can't make up my mind. My archer seems to be a good choice tho. My favorite char is a swashbuckler. If it was possible a ranger thief would be my ultimate class. Any thoughts?

According to others the best class to be is a Kensai, then level up once or twice then dual class as a Mage. Personally, I like fighter theives...you can kick serious @ss in combat, and find all the traps on your own and pick any lock. There's no need to worry about finding the right theif!

I'm very happy with a gnome illusionist that I am playing in a single player game, however in a multi-player LAN game I am also playing my chief character is a duel classed thief/conjuror - very useful character.

Kensai mages can be strong but in the beginning you can get your ass whooped real hard. It is a real disadvantage that you can't wear bracers or even the robe of vecna. I mean the robe could not be considerded armor since mages can use them.
That is why i don't use kensai mages.

Uh fof I hope you mean that you have a conjurer thief or else you have found a way to dual to anther kit which could be very helpful. btw I can't play via a LAN or anything else over the internet since I don't know anyone who has the game besides me Image

For raw power,

Monks) Deadly, but kinda boring (You don't get to enjoy those nice weapons)

Sorcerer's) devastating if done right, but reaalllyyy easy to screw up.

Cleric/Mage) My personnal favorite, many spells are duplicated, so you get a wider selection of spells (I.E Use the priest domination spell and memorize a diff. level 4 mage spell) and of course, many spells only one class gets. This is best with the XP cap removed so you can dual at level 14 cleric and have level 7 spells.

Kensai/Mage: WAY WAY overrated. A) You don't get to use bracers or robes but you get a bonus to melee skills. The catch is, at least in my experience, you won't melee much because you will be casting so you give it up for nothing.

He Giles did you ever play a monk. I mean that you can give the firecam fullplate to him. Kinda strange. But indeed the kensai mage is too overrated. In the later part of the game you will mostly use spells because your high AC is really bad. You can get a lower AC with a MAGE. And a mage with robe of vecna is really good. You just got to love Edwin(a).Never played cleric mage. Could be very good. Did play ranger cleric which also is a very good class. Sorceres never played them, read here that you better take them if you understand the game better. So I never played a sorcerer

Personally, I went with an archer, and was very pleased. By the time he hit the exp cap, he had a -14 THACO. Image With 7/2 attacks per round, there wasn't much he couldn't plug full of holes in short order. Yes, I'm gloating.

As far as the kensai/mage is concerned, he's/she's pretty overrated. That isn't to say it's not a powerful class, but it's at its weakest when soloing, which is what most people use the class for... go figure.

Spell-wise, I really don't see any reason to go with a mage. The sorcerer doesn't have as broad of a spell base, but that hardly matters if you pick your spells with a little more consideration than a fleeting whim. A few good offensive, defensive, and protection removing spells are really all you need.

You ought to decide beforehand whether or not you can afford to have Keldorn in your party (ie, you're not going to have Viconia). If not, then you'll definitely want to consider making your character a cavalier, just so you can personally wield Carsomyr. Yes, it's that cool. Image

Inquisitors are cool IMHO.They get to use the Carsomyr, have dispel magic at 2 times their level(spellcasters can say goodbye) and is immune to hold. What's more, you don't need Keldorn once you have an Inquisitor.Too bad they get the Paladin stronghold which isn't worth the trouble (Who needs Pride of the Legion when there's the Red Dragon Scale Armor Image ).

i played three times..
a)kensai/mage rocks...who sayz amour class is important?when come to kensai/mage.they have stoneskin etc.what i'm saying is they are not overated.i go through the game without ANY prob.even at the begining.

b)monk-they can deliver quite masive damage.and are real fast.quite satisfied with their one punch kill dragon skill. Image

c)soceror-very usefull to the team.and you don't need to find those mage/thief mage/cleric ..which can be quite weak in magic...u got to concentrate every magic on your main character..

i'm playing the fourth time..this time maybe as an archer.

Assasin Thief is VERY nice for soloing, especially without the XP cap.

Also about K/mages, AC may be over rated, but the robe of Vecna isn't ; ) Try a bezerker mage, you get to wear armour/bracers/robes, and most importantly, immune to mind spells at will!!!

Can't believe people complaining about the Kensai/Mage being weak. I found mine so incredibly powerful that I completely lost my interest in playing with him. And I didn't even use the best weapons for him (that would be to dual wield CF and the katana from PT). With the right spells he never got damaged at all while killing absolutely everything. Korgan didn't stand a chance in comparison and I believe that really sais it all.

I think the most powerful character I had was my Archer. Each hit does at least 11 damage and he never misses (except on critical misses). By the way, why did I lose my ranger cabin after doing that quest for the Forest Spirit woman? Can I get it back?

So how come no one has mentioned the "druid"????
Seriously I think the "druid" is pretty good....especially the "Totemic Druid" which can summon "spirit animals" once per day for every 5 levels....the Spirit animals are pretty good......
I'd say that the "druid" is one of the most underrated classes.....

Karembeu-this could be because of the Druid's low exp. cap. It's better to have a dualled/multi-classed druid IMHO(say, isn't Jaheira already a Druid? Image )

Instead of a druid, you can play the already mentioned cleric/ranger (the point being that he gets druid spells all the way up)

Sure Jaheira is Fighter/Druid and a good one at that she is.......
Although it is difficult playing as a "true neutral" druid when my one and only companion is Jaheira....... Image

Yeah well it still isn't the same thing.....a druid is a druid and a cleric/ranger is....well a cleric/ranger.... Image

I'm sure I've said this before but anyway... My prefered class so far is the Bard. Comes very handy in every party. Boosts up your fighters with the song, complements your thief with his pick pocket skill, adds extra spells to those of your spellcasters, high lore for identification, can use all weapons as well as instruments, can have a familiar, get good prices due to high charisma... Also, a Bard with Tenser's Transformation is the best fighter in the whole game, maybe with the exception of the K/M with the same spell.
