Why wont it work?

Post by Pertan »

So... i wanted to play a round of BG2 again so i started to install the game and made a character... put res highest possible for my pc, got some funky problem in the ingame menues but i could still use them so i made my character and started playing, everything worked just fine until i wanted to equip minsc with a 2 handed sword and the game crashed to desktop instantly... i thought it was some problem with the install so i reinstalled the game this time without ToB, put same resolution and the menues worked just like they should so i load up my save and the graphics look like they should but i still couldnt equip minsc with the 2 handed sword, just crash to desktop instantly.
I cant figure out why this is happening, i havent formatted my pc or anything all i've done is that i've gotten a new graphics card (GF 6600GT) but it seems unlikely to me that it could be causing this error.
Please help, i would hate not getting to play this wonderful game again. :(

Did you get the latest driver update to your card?

What resolution are you using? Have you tried lowering it a level?

Was using 1280x960 so i tried to lower it to 800x600 and then it worked, i feel so embarrased now i didnt think resolution would cause that error :o

Don't be embarassed. It's the sort of error anybody can, and will, make. :)

If I remember right, any of the video modes above 800x600 are considered untested or beta ~ so playing in that could potentially cause problems.

I always use 1024x768 without any problems, anything above tends to show a ridiculously large playing area but small menus. Anyway as is said earlier, the 1024 and over resolutions are officially unsupported :( .

Thats more because of the specs of PCs around that time weren't up to resolutions that high :) there's nothing technically wrong with those resolutions.

resolutions...

I tried a higher resolution for a while, and kept encountering bugs, as well.

I've a P4/2.6 w/ 1024mb of ram, as well as a Nvidia Geforce 5500...
Not top of the line these days, but still above anything available when the game came out....

But the problem with most games, the menus aren't set up for a high resolution.

As a result you end up with tiny buttons, which are really annoying.

I have another problem.
I lag ALOT in the game and i have no idea why. Its especially bad when fighting dragons, i have to keep the dragon away from my view unless when casting spells at it or the game gets unplayable for me.
I have a GF 6600GT for anyone that didnt read my first post, latest drivers and a good enough pc. One thing i noticed though is that when setting graphic options if i check the "Use 3D acceleration" box the squares start to flicker when u run the test. Also when selecting the gfx driver the only option i have is Default OpenGL Driver, dont know if that matters though as im not that good with Pc's (i just use them for pleasure).

Edit:
I have had BG2 installed on this computer several times since i got it and it have always worked flawlessy(sp?) until now after i have gotten a new graphics card.

Try tuning down the graphics settings in the config. - turn off all 3d acceleration and try the other lower spec. options.
You could also try new graphics card drivers - 56.72 seems like a good version generally so try that before the newer ones.

Good luck.
