Can't save in Illithid City

I think this is a commonly known issue but it's never been so....persistant.

I've a problem with saving the game in the Mind Flayer City in Underdark. I've reloaded the autosave before the dungeon a dozen times but the result is always the same: "You cannot save at this time". It works OK in the Underdark cavern area outside the Illithids though. I've also tried to take out all magical items from my characters that might interfere but with no luck.

I'm playing a neutral party. Me (Fighter/Druid), Jaheira, Cernd, Haer 'Dalis, Jan.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? I don't want to play through the whole area just to get owned by the Brain in the end or something...

Are any Illithids following you at the time of your being unable to save? It's possible that might interfere.

I don't think I ever had any saving problems, but then I always saved after being freed from the cell but still in the Illithid area.

Well I decided to try playing it through without saving. Fortunately, after opening the first door that needs "Godly strength" to open, I could save again.
