Thieves and scroll use

Post by tigergutt »

I was pretty disapointed when i found out that thieves in BG2 cannot use scrolls after level 10!

Anyone know why they decided drop the read scrolls ability for thieves?

Why make the least powerfull class in the game even more patehtic?

Neither am I. Besides, I don't think they're that pathetic ... they have unique skills, and while a number can be caught up by other characters (like detect traps), a thief can do this ALWAYS, and this allows your mages to use other spells. Also, backstabs that have the potential of doing 100+ damage are awesome ...

In the pnp game thieves can use mage scrolls and also priest scrolls once they reach level 10.(At level 10 there is a very big chance they will mess up reading the scroll, but that chance decreases as they gain levels)

Huh? I've never heard of thieves being able to use scrolls either. Sheesh! They're pretty much the most useful class in the game as it is now, with that new detect illusion skill they go trough spellcasters like butter on a hot sunny day, atleast in my humble opinion.

I'm curious as to why thieves would be able to use scrolls at all? I would have assumed that mages uses some kind of written language that's unknown to most people not to mention that there's propably some "mystic" aspect involved in tossing spells around. Heck! If thieves would be able to use scrolls then no mage in the realms would be able to keep his or hers Tome of spells safe for long methinks. ;-)

In old D&D terms, only few people can ACTUALLY get to level 10. I mean a level 10 character was like a demi-god. That's why a level 10 theif was able to read scrolls and even use some low level mage skills. I guess Bioware didn't think of this when they make BG1 since the exp cap was low. So maybe they forgot to implant this in BG2 or for the balance sake.

Imagine a high level theif combine a tenser transformation scroll and backstab, nothing can really stop this theif from backstabbing everything to hell.

Thieves can use scrolls becauce they see alot and learn alot. They have the read languages skill in the PNP game (AD&D)
and after reaching level 10 they have learned sufficient magic runes to read scrolls. Both cleric and mage scrolls.

I checked the ad&d rule book and they have a 25 % chance to misread the scrolls and get an harmfull effect on themself and the party.

I think it is cool that thieves can use scrolls and hate that they left it out in the game!
