High level mages or liches?
Big difference, liches are immune to 5 th level and lower spells (I think 5th)
To freak out liches, use this. cast impr. inv on self, cast spell immunity divination. walk in, ignore his attacks,it can only cast scripted area effect spells, Past pierce shield, or spell strike, breach, and dispell magic. Cast warding whip, which is not a shield breaker, really, but will keep it from raising protections for 3 rounds, so its a super interrupt, better than melf acid arrow.
Use either delayed action fireball, or inc cloud, both will get past lich immunities. not sure breach works, but habits die hard. inc cloud will actually interrupt lich spell casting.
The inv will totally prevent any targetted direct action spells, like dominate or even spell strike.
If you want to face it mano a mano, the spells you need to cast are spell turning, elemental protection and protection from energy and magic energy. and stone skin, of course. use triggers and sequencers. now, the above tactic of using inc cloud or delay fireball is immediate damage now, without the fuss of casting lower resist and greater malison, but if you need to turn the lich into squirrel, you'll need sequencecd lower resist.
Or jsut send in a cleric with boots of speed, inv and mace of disruption. that always works.
Good spells? Good spell combos? *Jon spoiler*

I go: Three Spell Sequenced Skull Traps.Originally posted by Thane of Cawdor:
I go: breach and/or spell thrust, secret word, dispel magic, and sometimes get a miscast magic on them, then try and take them down (including using summoned creatures and regular skull bashing techniques). But I don't really know what I'm doing.
Or if they're already spent: Two Minor Sequenced Magic Missiles.
Or: Melf, Melf, Melf, Melf, Melf, off-hand Flail of Ages, Melf, Melf...
Or: Simply run up and bash with the Flail of Ages and Belm +2.
Or: Cast Nature's Beauty, sit back and relax, admire the scenery, have a drink, and occasionally throw/shoot something at your new target practice dummy.
Or: Use Polymorph Self or the Cloak of the Sewers to turn yourself into a Mustard Jelly, undulate towards the Mage of your choice, and watch him waste all his spells on the totally resistant Jelly.
Or: Summon a couple of Skeleton Warriors (90% magic resistant) and let them do the job for you. Send in one by one in case of Death Spell.
*** Cheese warning ***
Or: Cast Improved Invisibility, run up under their noses and watch them stand there trying to target an illegal target.
Or: Fire a wand of Cloudkill in their direction and watch them suffer various spell failures while not making any attempts to move out of the cloud.
Or: Put on the Cloak of Mirroring and watch Mages kill themselves by casting damage spells at you. Only works without ToB; if you have ToB installed, you'll have to do the damage dealing yourself.

Xyx, I got I think from sabre or kevin's site the directions to re set cloak of mirrors. remove clck26.itm file from override directory, this will let the original BG2 definitions take hold again. tested by the infamous bounce contest. had imoen cast spell turning, and cast melf acid arrow at char. it bounced, bounced back until her turning wore off and hit her. I know this should owrk with cloak of refelctions and cloak of mirrors, but have always been too nervous to try. worried about spawning new bolts and frying everything in room.
Another one you might have forgotten...
cast shapechange, not a big deal anymore in TOB where every tom **** and harry is lvl 30 or higher, and use iron golem and its rediculously high magic resist to bash the enemy mage into goo.
