Started out to play the weakest party I could but finally got so sick of Haer' Daelis I booted him out. Currently I just came out of the Underdark with:

Halfling (female) Swashbuckler
Minsc and Boo (can't go without them)
Mazzy
Aerie
Imoen
Nalia

Hmmmm... five out of six are female and every male I have momentarily picked up has hit on Aerie.

I just now figured it out...
My party will most likely be...
Squall (PC)- Male Elven Fighter/Mage, CG
Jaheira
Minsc
Edwin
Viconia
Korgan

I think it's gonna work out good, actually.
I've got my main PC doing well in both magic and melee, with Edwin for my other spells, Jaheira and Viconia patching everyone up, and Minsc and Korgan for the front line fighters.

No thieves, but I really don't need one. I never use stealth or backstab, and I have Knock and Find Traps to help me out there.

Hmm, I'm liking this arrangement.
Plus, the alignments balance out for a nice, overall neutral party.

First time through the game I kept Imoen til the end. (After I got her back, I mean) But this time, I'm goin for a pimp party all the way, baby.

Damn I'm tired.

Not really, because all out is 100% resistance to everything, max stats and the best weapons and armour and savingthrows
So in comparison Jaheira Was mildly edited.
See is not much better than in BG1 and she was horrible then, and kept having "accidents".

This is my third trip through the game. Currently, I am about to enter Ust Natha with:
Archer (PC)
Anomen
Valygar
Jaheira
Aerie
Imoen
Contrary to what most have posted, I have found Anomen very effective and much less annoying than some (I still hate Haer Daelis). It is also cool to watch undead explode when he turns them. This is also my first time through without Minsc (and Boo), I didn't exactly leave them, the game glitched and would not allow them to be raised or resurrected or recover even though the hit points were at zero at death. I just left them behind (Bye Boo).

I'm playing my first time through and this is my party:
Me(paladin-inquisitor)
Anomen
Jaheira
Earie
Imoen
During the fight with Irennicus in the Asylum Minsc was disintegrated, and I'm currently in the underdark so I will have to wait before I can recruit a new member, I'm thinking of Using Keldorn. Me and Anomen can handle the most enemies head on, but I wouldn't mind having keldorn in front as well, I could use Korgan in front but I don't want any evil NPC's in my party.

In order of portraits :
Protagonist - Manveru (F/M/C half-elf true neutral)
Keldorn
Jaheira
Aerie
Imoen
Minsc

or

Keldorn
Protagonist (priest of helm, half-elf, true neutral)
Jaheira
Imoen
Aerie
Minsc

The Aerie sometimes is replaced by someone else to do NPC quests. I've also played with Viconia to see her romance interactions(protagonist = Fighter/Mage, human, true neutral)

My party the first time through ended up being:

Me: pure kensai, with Celestial Fury and Equalizer.
Keldorn, with Carsomyr. This guy made fighting mages simple.
Minsc, with the Silver Sword.
Jan, and later Imoen (I had to leave Jan in Spellhold, poor guy!)
Viconia, with Crom Faeyr.
Edwin, with the Staff of the Magi.

The major problem with this was that after I had defeated the second drow party in the Underdark, Keldorn decided that he didn't want to stop killing drow, and killed Viconia. "Nice guys, but we've been through I lot together and I've been giving you all lectures on tolerance and acceptance, haven't I?" I had to dip into Shadowkeeper, delete that particular variable from my saved game, and continue on from there. Minsc and Edwin never seemed to argue.

I've tried them all and then some.

Currently:

(me) Duncan D'alemon (Dwarf, Barbarian): dual wielding Warhammers.

Korgan: Dualing wielding Axes.

Viconia: (will pick up in a bit)

Edwin: (will pick up in a bit)

evil party as you can see. but will be fun.

I got him and I think Haer' Daelis is one of the best. why?? just try stone skin and tensers transformation and give him 2 katanas and he becomes superman.

the rest of my party
lavinia figter/ilisionist (wielding 2 longswords)
jan (wielding daggers, boomerang and pixie)
Aerie (staf of magi)
Anomen (wielding flail of the ages and defender of easthaven)
jahiera(scimitar and cub)
lama member of the Council of Mages

Liam - Hu Undead Slayer (PC)
Dugan - Dw Beserker (dual flails)
Mazzy - Changed to a Wizard Slayer via SK
Imoen

This is a great party for fighting, but not much character interaction. I also really miss Yoshimo for the awesome backstabs.

Next time, I'll play a CN thief and go for
Korgan or Minsc
Jaheira
Nalia or Edwin

The problems are Haer'dalis are:

1) He doesn't really get going well until he's got those high level spells, and that means he takes up a valuable party slot while he's still in wimp stage; and

2) His identification skill is worth nothing when you can buy the eyeglasses that cast Identification three times a day.

It's really too bad, because he certainly provides a lot of color to the party.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
