It's where everyone sets off noisy foreworks at the same time.
Linked to a historical event somehow. Trying to blow up Parliament in the with gunpowder in the 1600's lead to Fireworks Night. :p

So, anything new for you?

AKA Guy Fawkes night.

The population build bonfires all over the country and burn Guy Fawkes in effigy. Fireworks are also set off, as Ravager says. It's not very civilised, but hey, it's tradition

@Lasher, well, that would be bigger. The dropping out of college part...

@Fiona, I only really see/hear the fireworks part. In fact I'm trying to drown out the noise. They really overdo the fireworks here. :o

And those fireworks can be very dangerous.
The population build bonfires all over the country and burn Guy Fawkes in effigy.
And effigies of the pope, or is that practice over?

I don't think you can overdo fireworks, but we're all different. You didn't use the excuse of the guy for begging when you were a kid? You didn't buy fireworks with the loot from the begging and from guising at Hallowe'en? :(

@ Lestat. Never the pope. It was a popish plot though, so there is a sectarian element

A few people do that around here, making a Guy Fawkes and begging money off the passers-by, but it's not that common here, AFAIK.
As for overdoing fireworks, most weeks there is a fireworks display that the council spends their money on. This has been going on for years. I used to like fireworks, but now it's just overexposure. :o

Besides, there are all those rules on needing to be over a certain age to buy foreworks and what you are are supposed to set off in a garden- and those aren't exactly exciting... :p

I do not like municipal displays. That's not the tradition. But it's partly due to what you said, it's dangerous. Stop all our fun that way.

More exciting to learn to do it yourself with less spectacular fireworks than to see the flashy ones at a distance. Or so I think. Bah. Overprotection of children is a bad thing

A half brother of mine had most of his hand blown off playing with some, so I've never been that big on them either...

Lasher, I know this can happen if kids are not properly taught. I still think it's wrong to wrap them up in cotton wool. Sorry if that offends you

It's probably safer that way, as long as professionals are hired and everyone is kept back a safe distance.
Besides the kind of injuries caused by them aren't always the kind of things that can be bounced back from.
Oh, there's loads of kids that just couldn't care less what damage they do with fireworks too.
