Total Frustration (SPOILERS)

Sorry to keep buggin' you folks, but I just came up against it. I can't get the guard in front of Bate's mansion or Appleby to talk to me. I've been in Schuyler's basement and got the purchase order for the ring. I've done nearly all the quests in Tarant and when I go to the Mansion the guard captain blows me off, and Appleby tells me he is too busy and distracted to talk to me. Any help or pointers on how to solve this problem will be gratefully accepted!!!

Well, I assume you're talking to the guard during the day. And that you've actually read the receipt. That's what sets off the Bates quest. Talk to a random passerby or a shopkeeper. You should have the option of asking who is Gilbert Bates. If not, yeah, something's wrong. Look at your quest log to see what your current quests are, or ask Virgil what you should be doing next. You may have already gotten the quest to clear out Bate's warehouse. Or you may have missed getting the find Schuyler & Sons quest back in Shrouded Hills. If all else fails you can sneak into the Bates mansion through a long heavily trapped underground passage. The entrance is in one of the mausoleums in the cemetary

Bates

Read the letter form Schulers. Get the quest from the guard. Do the task. Talk to bates.

Guards are easy

the guard may blow you off because your presusion is low or like Darkstone told you, you must talk to him dearing the day.
