Stuck at the begining

Post by Pavlov »

I can't get past the first scene with the hobo. What's with the ''Who are you?'' No matter which key I press - nothing happens.
Any clues?

Give us more info. What clan are you playing? What version are you running? Anything else that might be important.

Brujah Clan. Tried 1.7 then 1.8 - same result. Tried disactivating AV and lowering resolution - no dice.

Did you try sneaking up on him? That bum has never even tried to talk to me, but I always sneak when feeding.

No - I even try going the other way but as soon as I go through the doorway I'm instantly attracted to him like a freakin' magnet. Then he starts talking to me and the ''Who are you?'' question pops up and I'm stuck there.

I've never even bothered to sneak up on him. I just always ran up and hit "F"

I tried that - doesn't work. I tried changing clans - doesn't work.
Is there something I'm not getting here? Am I supposed to type in something? Where?

OK, Wrong bum. The bum I'm thinking of is at the bottom of the stairs right after Smilin' Jack tells you to feed on the bum at the bottom of the stairs. (Just after you get shot up by the Sabbat escaping from the chop-shop.) You're talking about something else. Something with doors. Is this perchance after you've gone through the grate into the lower levels, and you approach the first Brujah? In that case, you are supposed to sneak up on him and use E to break his neck before he knows you are there. Perhaps the problem here is that we need to know just which 'bum' you are talking about. How do you get to him? Lots of detail, please. When we know which bum you're talking about, we can help you past him.

The "bum" you need to feed off of has a scuzzy looking wool cap. Somewhat unshaven. Tattered coat. Anyone have a picture of a bum?

OK, I know that one, but Pavlov speaks of, "No - I even try going the other way but as soon as I go through the doorway I'm instantly attracted to him like a freakin' magnet. Then he starts talking to me and the ''Who are you?'' question pops up and I'm stuck there."
You note the reference to a doorway. The bum at the bottom of the steps whose scarf tastes like gym socks doesn't have a doorway. So who are we talking about here?

He's referring to the Sabbat. Let me see if I can recall the order correctly: Feed on Bum, Sneak Past, Kill, Stealth Kill, then you get to try out disciplines, then you Sneak by Throwing Things.

To Sneak Past the patrolling Sabbat stay in the shadows and behind cover. Keep in mind flaming barrels, streetlamps, etc. all produce light which makes you easier to see. Keep an eye on your light meter.

When you fight him just swing away with whatever you have higher proficiency with: Unarmed (Bare Fists) or Melee (hand to hand weapons IE Tire Irons etc.)

Stealth Kill is easy. Crouch to sneak then slip up behind your target and when the action icon appears hit "E" to break his neck. You should see some of the weapon stealth kill animations.

The Discipline challenge(s) change from clan to clan and discipline level to discipline level.

Sneaking past the patrolling Sabbat is harder since there isn't any cover. Do your best to distract him and try to slip past when there's an opening. I never really used the "throw object to confuse guard" thing in the actual game.

Assuming I'm remembering that series of tasks correctly (which is far from certain, I can barely keep my eyes open currently) that should get you up to the last leg of the tutorial.

Sorry guys I'm really new at this. I just realized that this guy might not be a hobo after all. He has long hair with a sleeveless vest and his teeth are sharp. He says: ''They plop you out here like a naked baby in the woods... let me show you the ropes...waddya say?''

What am I supposed to do now?
I can't even figure out how to crouch. ''Z'' is first/third person and ''C'' opens up the attributes.

Wow, that's at the complete beginning before you even get to start the tutorial...

So it's after the "Trial" cutscene, at the first dialogue choice you get in the game. I never read of anyone getting stuck there already. Your specs seem OK. I'd suggest reinstalling completely, maybe with the official patch (1.2) only, and see whether it works.

Maybe a search on this forum, with "stuck" & "tutorial" and/or "beginning" might get you some results. I'd do it for you, if only my connection weren't that slow.

Check your drivers too. Make sure there aren't more recent ones available. FYI, that dude is named Jack and shows you the ropes.

That hobo is Jack and he is supposed to guide you through the tutorial, showing you the basics of the game.

Some dialogues are initiated by the game and there is no way around them, and while a dialogue is active, you can't do anything with your character.

Do you get any numbered lines of text listed below Jack's text?

Good idea. You might want to check and see if any of the CD is dirty or damaged JIC.
