The most powerful monster present in the game is by no small doubt the dreaded lagbeast. It strikes you where you are the most vulnerable and kills of your game no matter how good your party is. Image

Does the Balor count? That's not a name, it's a class of tan'ari.

Here another one...liches. Very nasty with their magic immunity, and weapon immunity (absolute immunity contingency), not to mention their repotoire of insanely powerful spells.

Vampires! Soloing with an assassin, you can avoid or single out all creatures, but you have no defense for vampires. You HAVE to fight them and then you have to run to the nearest temple and lick your wounds. Sucks.

Umberhulks deserve an honorable mention. I always have to resort to cloudkill on these uglies.

I think the Adamantite Golems are the hardest standard-monsters, because of several nasty abilities:

1.) Magic Immunity
2.) Very high physical resistance (about 90% I think)
3.) Can only be hit with +3 weapons or better
4.) Have 'Death Cloud' ability
5.) They can do quite a lot of melee damage.
6.) They have a special 'Slow' ability, that can't be countered by a 'Free Action' effect Image.

mind flayers have given me the most trouble. the adamanitite golems are easy if you buy that dwarven throwing hammer+3, +8 vs giant...

I would have bought that one at once, if I had a DWARF in the party.
I can still do this tactic with the flaming dagger+3, but it takes *very* long and I think this is lame.

Illithids, definitely. You can counter almost every other normal monster (chaotic commands for umber hulks, narrow doors for adamantite golems), but brain sucking... well... sucks ;-)

If you have very good saving throws (Paladin, protection items), the brainsucking is not that bad. Other party members should use missile weapons from safe distance. Fortunately Illithids are rather weak, and can be killed quite fast.

A good AC should protect you fairly easily from illithids in hand to hand. And chaotic commands is all the protection you need from their psionic blast. Missile weapons work wonders on them. They are predictable, at least.

I found vampire spellcasters far tougher.

All those monsters are PoC (peace of cake) except maybe the killer rabits. But there is one *special* monster, that is really hard to get around!!!

The Black Pig of Destruction with it's "Notorius Fart" special attack...

try to survive that one folks...
