1. Adamantine and Iron Golems are SUPER EASY to kill! Catch Tansheron's Bow. You will score 1-2 HP per attack with Adamantine Golems and 3-7 HP per attack with Iron Golems. Good hunt!
2. Vampires: the level draining is nasty and foul but manageable. Amulet of Power and Mace of Disruption +2 prevents it.
3. Mind flayers: another example of fallen taste of the authors of the game. You cannot do much with it. Nevertheless, I think it is manageable, too.
4. Demons: often helpless against Protection from Evil.
5. What I consider a problem:
a) Dragons - if you have some ethic criteria as far as your party is considered.
b) Packs of Gauths (until you get the Cloak of Reflection). Here is a statistic of one fight against 2 Gauths and a Beholder (and a pack of shadows) behind the bridge in the Unseeing Eye quest:
spells cast on my party: 96
successful attacks of my party: 13
HP lost: cca 250
game restarted: 9 times (usually Death Ray or Imprisonment of the protagonist)
The party was protected from Lightning, Spell Immunity - necromancy (Cause Serious Wounds - Gauths), hasted, protected from Evil and Fear.
Let us note: Spell casting impossible because of plague of spells cast on the party, approaching the creatures almost impossible because of recoveries from hits. Arrrrrrrgh! The same is true for 4 Gauths in the Beholder Lair a bit later.

I wouldn't necessarily call mind flayers "examples of the fallen tastes of the authors". Mind flayers have always been tough as D&D monsters. Anyone else remember how hard they were in the Darksun games from SSI?

I'm glad they're in the game, because they present a "unique" challenge. Besides, as long as your protected from their psionic blast attack and keep an eye on the intelligence drain, you have a fighting chance (unlike those mages who cast imprisonment on you).

As far as toughest monsters, I'll have to jump on the bandwagon with the clusters of gauths or beholders. Without some kind of reflection device (cloak of reflection, balduran's shield, etc), they can wipe out a party fast.

Hello all I am going to have to say that the beholders and the little ones are not to bad just stand off the screen and cast Holy Smite a few times. This can be a little lame but when you have a low level party starting of this was the only way I found to be easy with out throwing my computer out the window. And as for the mind suckers just cast Chaotic comands and get one of the tanks or a thief to drink potion of genius sets int. real high. and send them on in and presto deado. Also since they walk real slow run then hide in shadows then sneak and stab. For me the one battle that I've had trouble with is the lich just because of all those real cool spells that he has/or could that be a she. As for the dragons I really think they should be a little tougher I know that they need to be killed or the game would never move but there should be a lot more the party should have to do to be-able to kill these freaks of nature like what ever happened to the dragon lance. Anyway so there is my two cents hope every one is having fun with the game.

Anyone remember the rabid chicken from BG1? Well, those were some FEARSOME monsters, right?

Oh, reminds me... Maurice-demilich is also a monster to watch out for. You must have the "Notorius Phart" spell to wipe him out... or at least, get the "Buck Santa" NPC with you Image Image Image

But... honestly, the only really annoying no-name monster, if you are not lvl 8 or 9 but a bit higher, are the mindsuckers... err... flayers, that is

Also, if you ran into a dozen of Beholders without something to reflect their attack (cloack or Balduran shield) you are dead meat.

As someone new to the game (and to D&D itself in fact) I'd have to say that Mind Flayers are the absolute pits. There is not an awful lot you can do against them except hope that they don't wipe you out instantly. Even Monks with huge resistances can still fall to them within the blink of an eye. I had nine seperate save games just for the Illithid city. (Yes, I know you get some potions to protect you from them, but there are a lot of the buggers and the potions don't last all that long.) I had more trouble with them than I did defeating Irenicus in the Finale. Ugh. Hate them.
Beholders are easy if you have the Cloak of Reflection and/or Shield of Balduran. Going up against them without either of these items is almost suicidal, so getting them is a worthwhile investment (though expensive in the case of the Shield).
Liches are horrible things to fight. I have avoided them wherever possible so far, but might take a shot at them next time through.
Vampires aren't too bad to fight where combat itself is concerned, but their level drain is a real bummer and possibly the most irritating and frustrating thing in the game.
Demons I found to be surprisingly easy (relatively speaking).

I'd just like to mention in passing that Umber Hulks should be eradicated from the face of the earth. No matter what level you are they often manage to confuse party members, which makes me tear my hair out in frustration.

You have to say Dragons, then Liches.
Reason? Because every time you encounter them there is only one. If they are in packs like Beholders and Mind Flayers... Watch out!

Maybe they should do that in the X-pack, otherwise where are the XP coming from? Image

I can't remember there specific names, but it was a type of mist-like the crimson deaths. it had this death wail attack or something that always feared at least 2 party members and caused a cloudkill like effect which the feared party members proceeded to run through repeatedly. And i never was expecting them.

I didn't mind beholders, but i was usually able to close with them and a combination of my 2 frontline fighters and 2 priests with multiple holy smites, and an occasional flame strike from a wand took care of them

Here's a way to kill beholders/gauths without any special equipment.

(3mages/sorcerers (or more) work best)

Know the place where they are lurking atm.
Then have two of the mages/sorcs cast web and one cast greater malison, all at the same time. Atleast the gauths get caught without any hope of escaping (you can fire couple webs more if you have a sorcerer with you). Then about 9 fireballs, we have nicely cooked gauths/beholders, they never even got the chance to use those a$$hole rays against you. Some may consider this lame, but try fighting against them without shield of balduran or cloak of reflection...

i must say it really depends how far u are in the game.
in the beginning i really had troubles with the umberhulks u had to smack them very hard and there chaos spells where very annoying.
when it comes to flyers and beholders/gauths
when i encountered the first ones i really died very fast. but when u fight them a couple of times there are not that much troubles any more (though some big groups with beholders/gauths can still give my some serious problems)
one group of monsters i didn't hear are throlls didn't anyone found them hard to beat?
accept for the fight with balor i haven't had to reload as much times as when i had to fight with the 3 throlls in d'arniss keep at the end.
Maybe i went to soon to them but still throlls are hard because they live in large groups Image

the spirit trolls would sometimes kick my but in the D'arnise keep cause they simply would not die. they'd hover at "near death" forever.
