Is it worth it

Post by TonyMontana1638 »

Having loved the V:TM Bloodlines game and seeking more blood-sucking satisfaction, I considered trying this game but have been scared away by the many unfavorable reviews I've read. I know it isn't exactly the most expensive game in the world to buy, but I was curious if anyone could give me some opinions on if it's worth a purchase. Thanks.

V:TM Redemption is a very, very different experience from Bloodlines.

Redemption is a very linear game with very little RPG, enthralling Bloodsucking and Masquerade compared to Bloodlines, even though there are a few different endings based on how you play, which you probably already have read. There are more disciplines and almost no optional dialogue in Redemption and you have no choice of clan. You are sired as a Brujah, but it doesn't in itself limits the disciplines you can learn from books along the way. Some of the pnp-fans claim that Bloodlines is more true to the source than Redemption, but I am just a gamer in this aspect; it doesn't bother me.

Combat and views is a bit reminiscent of KotOR (actually it's the other way around, but whatever...), when you have 1-2 extra party members along, and you'll probably experience some of the same problems with micromanagement and friendly fire...besides frenzy and torpor and a little daylight, hehe.

I got it when it first came out and after 2 hours of play I was infuriated with controls, pace and camera angles and quit the game while I still had some hair left. Two weeks later equipped with a little more patience I gave it a second try and I think it was worth it.

Just remember to patch it.

i'm tempted to get it but the lack of rpg elements kind of puts me off a bit as i love roleplaying games with combat rather than combat games with a tiny little bit of roleplay. when you say there is very little roleplay, does this mean its just simply a hack and slash kind of game then?

Mostly Hack'n slash and a lot of interesting disciplines to smite your foes in two different timelines, which adds some Hack'n slash and Shooting too, in your ongoing quest to...different endings.

Replay value really comes from the way you build your character with disciplines, stats and humanity. Unlike Bloodlines, humanity is only affected by actions and dialogue in Redemption (can't increase it with skill points). Some of the more uh, vile disciplines requires a very low humanity rating.

The story is kept together with cutscenes and events and while there is little dialogue your choices will only affect your humanity and not the path in itself. Not unlike Deus Ex which is also considered an Action-RPG and even though you can't really stray from the path it's still quite immersive - at least once. Maybe I'm just an old romantic, but Redemption is still good to me.

Choice of M or F?

Can you at least choose between a male or female Brujah character?

Redemption's Value...

Redemption holds none of the same qualities of Bloodlines. Everything said here is true. I thoroughly enjoyed the game despite its flaws because I am an avid fan of the World of Darkness created by White Wolf. This version has its disciplines more closely tied to the PnP game. If you are coming at it from a Bloodlines perspective, the game is worth it to see what Bloodlines could have been and where a sequel could go.

If you are a fan of the PnP game, you might enjoy it for the Dark Ages beginning that allows Diabelerie and the transition to the Modern Age. It is a basic introduction to the World of Darkness(there should have been Pnp Adverts). If you are adamant that your gaming experience be as free of errors, glitches, and inanity as possible, do NOT buy this game. I personally loved this game, but there are fans of the PnP that hate it. This should be enough information for anyone to decide whether or not they want to buy this game.

So when did this game come out? Is it made by the same people as bloodlines, like white wolf, and masquorade? Id it a sequeal or prequal to bloodlines and did it actually come out after? Sorry for the rhetoric, but I just heard of this game.

Nope, this game is much older than Bloodlines, but i personally think there's a better story behind Redemption than there is in Bloodlines.

And that's a nope too. You are and always will play as Christoph of the Sword Brethren, which is as you might have guessed, a male.

It is April 2007 and for me VTMR is still the best game I've ever played... I love RPG games and try to play them as much as the job and family permit, but since VTMR I just didn't come across the game that would glue me to the chair day and night... I didn't like Bloodlines that much, and I think that all of other RPGs I have played since (currently I'm playing Neverwinter nights 2) missed something very important - atmosphere... VTMR had atmosphere that reallly immersed me into the world of darkness, and I just love what Kevin Manthel did with the music score... Also, I really liked the story because it wasn't same old "the great evil emerged and you are the only one that can save the world" stuff, but it was rather a love story and all that Christof wanted was not to save the world, but to save his love. So it's kind of easier to get into Christoph's skin... In fact, the day before yesterday I installed the game again (3rd time) and I am enjoying it thoroughly... Yes, of course the game has its flaws and weaknesses, but what game doesn't have them? I simply choose that the flaws don't bother me and I enjoy the world of darkness that VTMR introduced me to...

Definately worth it.

I actually played Redemption long before Bloodlines came out.

I'd still play it again after a long time. Yep, there's not a lot of role playing action but, the plot is very interesting, and instead of being a lowlife like you are in Bloodlines, your character in this game is very well defined and can become a real "badass".
It's interesting how you travel through the ages and you'll learn more about the dark ages and clans you probably haven't heard of such as the near-extinct Cappadocian clan. There's a lot to be learned about Vampire world with this game, and the weapons, disciplines, NPCs you meet, and places you visit make it worth it.
PS: In this game, get your manipulation really high and you can actually sell items for more than the value you bought them later in the game, hehehe. So you can really stock up.
Also, another bonus about this game is that you get to control a whole coterie of characters instead of just 1 character. So yep, you'll be an old-school Brujah (not the modern Brujah by any means) but you'll get to control several characters of other clans as well.
This game also displays a greater variety of weapons, armor, etc.
In my opinion a great pickup if you enjoyed Bloodlines.
