Ammunition for the crossbow?

Post by Dealon »

Hi!

I've just finished the quest which involved killing chastity, and also picked up the crossbow. The problem is that I can't find any ammunition for it. I've been looking in santa monica/hollywood and downtown without result.

Who will sell me this ammunition?

While writing, I'll also ask a small question; Which is the best ranged weapon in the game?

Thanks

Edit: I used the search function, and found an answer to my question. :-)
Once you have the crossbow, sell it to one of the merchants, then buy it back and you should then be able to purchase ammo from that merchant. Alternately, install the unofficial v1.5 patch and you will have access to crossbows (and fire crossbows) earlier.

It depends.... for me there's no 'best ranged weapon', it all depends on the range, the enemy, and your playstyle...
For big enemies, I like using machine guns, for example Lassiter Killmatic ('boss' is a big enemy, like the Sheriff in that bat shape..). In close combate Jaegerpager XV(have no idea of the name of the shotgun...) ownz! And for medium-range combat Colt Anaconda is a nice weapon!
Still if I had to chose just one of those, I'd pick Jaergerpargas XV :)

For my money the best general purpose ranged weapon is the Anaconda. That puppy hoits. However, it does vary with the situation. If you've got a Jaimie Sue and high enough skill to use the scope, it's really scary, but with less than enough skill to use the scope, it's quite unremarkable at range and the ammo maxes out 'way too low (I don't know a single hunter, even good ones, that go out with a lousy 20 rounds of ammunition). The .38 is good enough for popping regular zombies, but the Brokk is better. The flame-thrower cooks when dealing with vampires at close range (pun fully intended). The shotgun does good damage but takes too darn long to reload. The Jaegerspaz shotgun and McKlusky .50 are awesome weapons, but you get them too late in the game to do much with them, and ammo is in limited supply. The Steyr Aug does decent damage but it's got nasty recoil - you can't stay on target for much more than bursts of 2 shots - same for the Lassiter. At the end of the game, I'm usually toting the .45, the shotgun, the Brokk, the Lassiter, the Steyr Aug, the Jamie Sue, and the Flamethrower. I reserve 1 for unarmed, 2 for melee. It seems a good mix.

To answer original question...

I have found that if you sell a weapon to a vendor that doesn't sell that ammo, that vendor then sells the ammo if you buy it straight back(otherwise the weapon will likely disappear). Try this with crossbow, I am going to do so soon.

I just really hate running to Santa Monica to get ammo for the Jaggerspas XV when I can get it in Hollywood when I ask for the "Special".

My vote goes to Anaconda too. Precise and powerful, it's useful all throughout the game.
ROMERO: If you should see any zombies in that time, you need to put them down. Just don't let them bite you.
PC: Why? Do you turn into a zombie if they bite you?
ROMERO: Naw, it just hurts like a bitch.

The Jaegerspass XV as it is named in the game is actually a Franchi S.P.A.S. 15, the bigger badder brother of the S.P.A.S. 12. It is properly renamed (as are all weapons in the game) after application of the unofficial patch.

And together with the .44 Magnum is my favourite weapon as well. Never really could control the insane kickback on most of the automatic weapons. Seems that every bullet after the first lands in the ceiling if you ask me.

Little fun fact: Jaegerspass = Hunterfun (German jäger/jaeger = hunter, spass/spaß = fun). ;) . I think most of the names are a bit tongue in cheek.

not forgetting

the Killmatic on single-shot mode!!!

the Killmatic on single shot has great accuracy, long range and does reasonable damage. Along with the Anaconda, which has a most satisfying 'feel' to it, the Killmatic and the flamer are my faves. However, under pressure, I often opt for the McKlusky instead of the colt because of its greater capacity - not as satsifying a shot as the colt, but you run out of ammo rather slower and when surrounded by brain-eating zombies, that is a consideration.

Killmatic for long range, Mc/Colt for short and thrower for fry-ups.
that and the t-blade are all you really need, but it is nice to have guns, lots of guns.
