Ok, first load up your game in BG1, go to the Character Record screen and export your character; remember the name that you exported to. Quit the game and use either My Computer or Windows Explorer to go into the BG1 directory - this depends on where you installed it, the default is C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate - now go into the Characters directory. Find the file that you've exported, ########.CHR, click on it and press CTRL + C.
Now go into the directory where you installed BG2 - default is C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA. Go into the Characters directory and press CTRL + V, the file that you copied should now appear in this directory. If you're using custom portraits follow the same procedure but go into the Portraits directory instead.
Run BG2, and start a new game. At the Character Creation screen, click on the Import button at the bottom and select Character File. You'll see a list of names, find your file - without the .CHR at the end - and select that. The game will then let you reconfig the character a bit so that it would work with BG2. After that start your game.
