soloing
maybe It's a stupid question but what exactly is soloing. I think it means playing with only one character in your party, can anybody confirm this, I just wanna know for sure.

Yep, that's what it means. I haven't tried it yet in BG2. I'm not sure what character I'd use if I did--probably monk or F/T. Though I'm honestly not sure how people are getting around all the encounters that seem to require a mage. If it weren't for "breach," I would have died a thousand deaths so far.
Well i've only solo'd a monk and quite honestly he never had a single problem with mages...because of several things...great saves...(a must). Stealth(invis) (a must). Big punch that drops a lot of mages fast. Stun and quivering palm while they are still blue..or cannot see you (see stealth). Finally 3% magic resistance per level at gained at lvl 14. My solo monk was level 21 before heading off to spellhold and his stats were amazing...I stood toe to toe with every monster in the game including dragons, liches, mindflayers, etc and did not even blink at thier magic. My solo monk had to be the funnest game i've played so far. (be advised they are a little weak at first so pick your quests carefully) but after like level 12 look out!!..anyway.
Some more tips to soloing...
1. Get the cloak of the sewers early...the regeneration from changing to a troll is priceless
2. Get lots of healing potions and potions of regeneration.
3. Get lots of potions of invisibility so if you have to hide and regenerate in the middle of monsters you can.
4. Get your AC as low as is possible for your class with eq...for a monk i went and got keldorns armor right away.
5. Get your saves as low as possible
6. This one's important.. potions of genius and potions of intelligience...these are a must if you plan to solo mindflayers.
Im sure there more but thats the basic solo stuff.

I solo'd BG1 with a F/T/M half-elf. Quite easy with enough healing potions/gold (to pay for healing).
Haven't tried BG2 solo but I just started with a Kensai (to be dualed to Mage) and a Thief (to be dualed to Cleric). Haven't made it out of the prison yet so I don't know how this will work???
I've seen other posts suggesting one do this after going through the game once so you have an idea where 'all' the traps are (to circumvernt needing a thief - doesn't work for me as I like to open everything - and lockpicking is essential for that (some things just can't be bashed open) and there are places in the game where you will surely need healing when none is available without a Cleric/Druid/Ranger(high level) around. So I guess my soloing BG2 will be limited to two characters of my own choosing (through Multi-player option).

I'm soloing an elven Multiclass Fight/Mage/Thief and am having the best fun ever! I've removed the cap of course, but hey, I'm soloing!
He is great in close combat, can take down mages and the initial backstab works wonders. Nice taking out the mage with a quick backstab, casting stoneskin, blur, mirror image and improved invisibility, and whooping those woosy fighters!
Plus I have both the mage and fighter strongholds! Sweet
And I've got easily over 60+ potions of Greater Healing. (27Hp ones) So even when I get hit, healing isnt a prob. Especially with Ring of Gaxx and boots of speed... 2 HP every 3 seconds!

Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

As everyone else has said, mages are no problem. Stealth is the key for my character. I'm soloing as an assassin. One backstab and the mage is history, before the stoneskins can ever be set off. Otherwise, its either wait them out or pester them to death. Doesn't even need setting traps.
As far as tips go, it all depends on your character.

I do not think that soloing is a good idea. I tried for a while then I gave up willingly. Genesis said that he (she?) stood "toe to toe" with every monster. I would like to know what he meant exactly.
The basic problem with soloing is that you cannot fight even a medium-strong enemy at all. Your "fighting modes" will be: a) invisibility + backstab, b) Cloudkill from behind a corner, c) Big Fun spells like Finger of Death (if it didn't pass then reload), etc. This is nothing what I like. The impassable obstacles are stun (hey Genesis, what did you do with the guy with Celestial Fury in the Guarded Compound?), Hold Person, Slow, packs of enemies that cannot be lured out one by one, "poison"-like spells/attacks (because of fast rate of hitting, you cannot counter with healing spells - casting failures) and so on. Also, the problems with inventory capacity are irritating.
I suggest "trioing". Create 3 single/dual class characters. This preserves both your ability of fighting and the super-level effects (a fighter/mage/thief will divide his XP among 3 "characters": a fighter, a mage and a thief, so that you are losing nothing with your trio). I have tried. It's cool.

I agree with Radek. I soloed IWD, and it just wasn't all that fun because I had to use so many damn cheese techniques. If I do try somethin like this, I might try a two-person party of Kensai dualed to theif and cleric/mage (maybe just pick up aerie and make it a lovers against the world kind of thing). The idea of a kai-powered backstab with Celestial Fury just makes me giggle like a little schoolgirl.
Is anyone who is soloing not removing the XP cap? It seems like it would be necessary to me.

You do miss out on the NPC's if you solo but there is the whole hero aspect. A single fighter against increasingly difficult desperate odds. If anything BG2 promotes parties of NPC's so i would stick with a smaller group maybe 3 or 2 as Hazim mentioned. Much of BG2 is dedicated to relationships between players if you get rid of that you the player looses out.

When i say i stood toe to toe with every monster, i meant exactly that. As a monk you are immune to poison so and also immune to hold person and a bunch of the other stupid spells. My magic resistance was insance...3% per level by level 21 at exp cap it was base 69 + 10% from gaxx ring + 5% from amulet of power = 84%. I shrugged of a lot of magic spells. my saving throws were all negative the best being save vs death at -4...for saves ring of gaxx -2, ring of prot +2 another -2, my base which was damn low also. I also had the sensate amulet, so I basically walked up to most demons and began shalacking them with stun and quivering palm they dropped fast. Guarded compound is no sweat because, i being solo I reached 21 early and was also immune to non magical weapons...I could go on...but I'll say this while you can solo a lot of diff classes only a monk can become powerfull enough to go toe to toe will just about every monster in the game so long as your're prepared. If you dont believe me pick a monster and I'll tell you how i beat it. for example Balor (very tough) fell to quivering palm. Mindflayers all fell to stun (with potion so int to help me). Dragons all fell to quivering palm. Funny enough the toughest monster I fought was that stupid ogre in underdark with the crazy halberd that did all kinds of additional damage..Although in the end he fell to stun too. I did avg 25 points of damage on each successful hit even without gauntlets of crushing...plus on critical hits i maxed 60 pts on damage often. Twisted rune i used stealth to lure out the lich..waited for him to waste all his spells on me which with 84% magic res and insance saves just bounced right off. Then wham 2 hits, dead!..Kangaxx same deal, although I had to wait till i got cutthroat+4 before that quest so i could hit the demi-lich form. I also had to use a scroll of magic immunitity to avoid imprisonment...I could go on but you get the gist.
There are a lot of easy quests to start off the game with...its a little tough at the earlier levels obviously and you will have to put off some quests but it can and has been done. heres a few.
1. After leaving irenicus's dungeoun my monk was about level 10.
2. Circus tent
3. first part of copper coronet quest
4. graveyard..ghost boy and grave digger quests
5. free viconia and talk to jan quests
6. harper quest (should be level 11 or 12 by now)
7. maever's quest (stun works on golems)
8. realis's quest (go around the gang at sewers)
9. nalia's quest..get a flame sword to finish up trolls (should be like level 15 after this)
these are some of the easy quest by level 15 a monk is like crazy strong...Just have to be creative.

I just beat the game playing solo, but in a different way.I choose a multi F/M/C and i choose not to remove the exp cap.So my PC character was limited to 11/12/12.
This was more like a test to see if the game can be beaten playing solo (at normal difficulty) but the way the designers planned it.The fact that it can be done means that the equipment you can find in the game is so powerful that allow a low lvl character to beat the game.
My PC stats : Str 18/91, Dex 15, Con 15, Wis 13,Int 18, Cha 3, Max HP=84.Most of the time he used Flail of ages and Defender of Easthaven (later substituted by Crom Faeyr),wearing Robe of Vecna or Red Dragon scale armour (the Bladesinger chain is found at the very end of the game).
I didn't miss any thief abilities, since i don't use backstab/ pickpocketing at all (even in my normal games).I usually bashed lock doors/chests or used knock.Strange thing is i never get killed by a trap.
Most common cause of death omination, usually by beholders.
If you choose the right order in completing the quests, you can finish the game without much trouble and without resorting to tricks like cloudkill or fake talk (i never used those, not even in dragons).
As for the game,I did most quests (expect those involved with NPCs-but i did planar sphere to built the Faeyr) and i didn't battle Adalon, the Dragon in Hell and Drizzt's party (being a good character).

A big key to getting throught the game solo is being immune to a variety of effects. I'm currently soloing with a F(berzerker)/T dual class. While I dualed at 9, 13 would be better but harder until you got the fighter skills back.
Berzerker rather than another kit is key here as he can still wear all the armor, but also gets protection from Hold, Charm, Domination, Confusion, Maze, and Imprisonment with his berzerk ability. Remember, Maze, Domination and Charm are insta-kills in solo. Also, Confusion and Hold generally might as well be.
Kensai/Thief is fun but would be much harder to solo with.
Also, if you want to solo and don't want to resort to cheesy tactics remember that you don't have to fight every enemy in the game. You don't have to fight ANY dragons, Kangaxx, Twisted Rune, or many beholders or mind flayers.
On the other hand, while I consider cloudkill from fog of war cheesy, I think invis/backstab is a lot of fun and can be quite challenging...only so many invis potions and you can't hide unless they can't see you. Using invis/backstab I don't have much problem except with deadly creatures that are immune...like beholders and dragons.
Then again, beholders are easy with the shield or cloak...
Dual class, you have to deal with the gap before the first class comes back on-line. Easy exp includes some of the quests listed but also:
Thief - locks/traps on all the doors in Mae'vars, traps in the bridge district
Mage - Memorize spells

Soloing is an individual choice
Some will like it some will not. I just finished as an asassin dualed to a mage. I overcame the dual class transition by (largely) collecting and then writing scrolls. As an assassin you can hide well and avoid difficult monsters, and once the mage starts to kick in you can be improved invisible, stoneskined (etc). With a high strength most backstabs drop most opponents.
The secret is careful quest selection and a good 'run away' instinct (especially if you run and hide (in shadows)).
RiPPer, I personnally feel that a theif is the best way around traps and locks especially as they are worth exps. But with knock (spell), high strength, and good saves locks are not a problem and you just set off every trap.
I believe that soloing is something to do after you finish the game with NPC interactions (etc.) as many times as it takes to satiate the BGII disease (I think my life is in Dolorous Decay). - Curdis

There are locks that you can bash open...if you're strong enough, so you dont always need to pick it. As far as traps...if you have insane save's and magic resistance such as a monk..you can basically walk into the trap watch it try to hurt you then laugh as you walk away unscratched.Originally posted by RiPPeR:

how do u guys play solo without being a thief multi/dual class, i cannot imagine how u get throught traps and open lock without a thief, can u put a tip for a non-thief solo?
Soloing update:after my try as a F/M/C i choose to solo a paladin-my all time favourite class.I picked Undead Hunter, for obvious reasons.
Although i was sceptical about how i would perform against mages,in the end Undead Hunter kit proved to be very powerful as a solo PC.In fact i reloaded even less than the F/M/C solo-i didnt count how many times
i died but maybe it was less than 10.
If someone is interested,i can give some tips on proficiencies/stats/(cleric)spells etc.(And no,Carsomyr is not the only weapon choice for a paladin.)
