Magic

Post by davfrahen »

I`ve suddenly found magic. Up to now, I`ve been satisfied to get a well equiped tank or two and blast my way through. This time, I used Aerie, Jaheira and Imoein mainly for their magic and they sure as hell kick butt!
A problem I have with spells is how do I know the spell has been completed and a new one can be given. Dont want to interupt and cause a mis spell.
I would also like some info on the different values of types of spells.
Which are best for crwded situation.
I love Choe`s interaction, but she is so poor in combat .
Please give me some idea how to boost her up.
Thanks

you should be able to tell when a spell has been cast by the spell animations. in crowded areas, using non-area affecting spells, such as magic missile, finger of death, melf's acid arrow etc. - avoid spells like fireball, cloudkill etc. in crowded areas if there are civilians around, and also be careful when casting area-effect spells near your party members or they will take damage too.

When a character casts a spell you'll see them wave their arms around and you'll hear the incantations, when a character stops waving their arms around like the Robot on Lost in Space you'll know they're done. As a side note to magic, while individual spells are powerful, chaining together spells is even better. Example: Launching a fireball at a group of enemies is damaging. Using Web and Entangle on a group of enemies to immobilize them and then launching cloudkill and fireballs is devastating!

Party NPC, from a mod.

Davfrahen, you'll also often hear spellcasters exclaim something like "my spell has been interrupted!" when they couldn't finish casting, which helps to know what's going on.

This is an excellent site that discusses all spells, and their relative value. Of course, the opinions of the three people who discuss the spells are their own, but they are well considered.

You can also use a feature that is in gameplay options, it pauses game after the spell is cast, all you have to do (as you should anyway), is to keep checking the dialogue window. It says something like "Jan:casts magic missile", and you can be sure it's done.

I`ve gone for the pause option. It slows the game down a bit, but think it makes things a bit easier.

easier?

for that real gaming experience you want to have the NPCs with scripts that leave them making decisions on their own which make you frustrated...

Jaheira has insect plague - why not have her use it on a single kobold when there is a massive army of trolls bearing down from the other direction?
or find that all your acid/fire arrows have been wasted on a clay golem.

much more challenging if the NPCs react rather than follow orders.

I recently played with the party AI turned off so that they were hyper obedient but whilst that does help with tactical battles, overall, the scripts are better. You can always choose a script not intended for a particular class and that can reduce the wasted spells etc - e.g. give a priest the script for a fighter or a MU that of a ranged thief.

Effects

Orcs and other slow moving creatures usually have low dex. Fireballs and other spells that will effect movement do well against dex low monsters. This works for all abilities. Mainly however spells will effect either/or strength, dexterity, constitution, and intelligence. Try combining your area effect spells. Spells like grease and web work well with cloudkill and fireball. There are many more powerful spells you will acquire so pay attention to what these spells will effect.

Many spells shoots a bolt-like spell, for example fireball. As soon as this bolt leaves the caster (you can even hear a sound that is easy to recognize), you can start casting a new magic. As for summoning spells and their like, that dont shoots a projectile, just use your sound to hear when the spell is done casting.
To be sure, you can wait untill the spell animation has gone completely, to start casting the next one.
Anyway, you can only cast one spell per round, so it doesnt make a difference.
