56k, which has rarely affected the performance of my PC on the internet.

However, as internet sites are now beginning to incorporate flash intros etc, and I would like to play some form of game over the internet (NWN ;) ).

Would an upgrade in modems be appropiate?

Well depended on how much you use it and which games you are interested in playing online.
If NwN is the only "reason" per se for upgrading your modem, I'd say that you should wait untill we know more about system requierments.
If you feel that its performance is lacking else where - then it might not be bad to upgrade to another type of connection.

Way your cost-benefit up, and decide.

I'd say I've never regreted of getting my cable (256/64) instead of K56, and might considere nearer to NwN to upgrade to 512/128.

But I also used the internet alot - besides gaming, (it is actually only recently I've started gaming over the net) and it could therefor only pay to upgrade (I pay less per month now than I did with my K56 if not taking into account the initial fee for getting my cable modem installed)

i have regular, crappy dsl that sometimes lag like a... well... it's usable atleast. i play starcraft and i get very decent ping on that, just everyone else's ping sux. :(
anyways... i pay like $40 a month, been thinking bout switching companies, but before that must get my darn slow processor upgraded, but that'd mean getting my m-board changed too. which is... well.. annoying. i'm running a P2 400 mhz with 192 mb ram and a 64 mb Nvidia GeForce2 64 mb MMX vid card. Using a 10 gig hard drive. damn, those mp3's are taking up way too much hard drive space... so.. yea, the only place i mite have a concern with is my processor. if only i had $1000 to spend on my computer.. :(

i'll shut up now... :P :D

Hmmm, I guess that I should rephrase my question.

Would NWN by your opinion run well on a 56k modem. That's why I asked if anyone played Everquest on a 56k modem.

Apparently a cable modem can host a game for 64 players, for some reason i am extremly dubious about that claim ;)

I couldn't imagine that it would run WELL but it might run so that it isn't too annoying I guess it all more or less depends on the server. I know my 56k is too slow for tetris on-line but who cares soon I will have a ADSL 2048 connection (yes yes I know you can kiss my feet later :D :D )

I don't know prices in AUS but I think that if you want to play NWN on-line (and that can easily exceed 5 min. ;) ) it will be cheaper with a fixed amount a month and a 24 hour cable.

Hey, just do like me - get a cable connection (or whatever you call it)!!!

It´s on 24-7 for only 50 D.kr. (5 US $) a month and a downpayment of 1300 D.kr. (13 US $). This gets you a 10 megabit connection to be shared by 10 appartments, few (if any) of which use it at the same time!!!!

Oh my, are you turning green with envy?! ;)

Are you sure that there will be no cost for online play? Suprised, because most online games(Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot) charge.
Thats really cool. Increases chance of me getting the game.

As of yet, there it is still not permitted to take money for playing (Pay-to-play).
The reason it happens with DAoC and Anarchy online is that these are persitant worlds on official severes - wich Bioware have no plans on making(yet)

NwN will most likely be more like direct connection to people wanting to game together or a severe made by "3-party" groups. Not official severes, wich is why Bioware dosen't want people to make money on them.
NwN is not a MMORPG like the others.

Right makes sense. NWN worlds are made by the players, not the company.

Well thats good news. I don't think i would want to spend 10 bucks a month to play this game online.

Even *if* you were allowed to charge a monthly fee for playing on some server, I'm sure a group of ppl would make a 100% free server along with a great world, just to slap the other guys on their face and gain publicity. That's how Internet usually work. :)

fix: misspelled "world" :P

Well how the internet is starting to work these days is leaning towards "pay-to-do-something", almost all websites have economical problems or are nearing them.
What makes NwN different is that there are no plans on an official sever because NwN is directed at "modules" and not persitan world.

If there was an official severe persitian world - I would imagine it would be a pay-to-play.
But since there is Bioware and the publisher would not like other to get rich on their product, hence the no-charge clause.

Besides the point. I hope people wont play online with hacked character like newbies. Or even download hack which makes them invincible or some crap.

Bioware should make Neverwinter cheat-free. Unlike BG which has a cheat console.

I also hope some newb doesnt make some gayass experience booster thingo. Anything over the 20th level does not abide by Third Edition rules! There IS NO LEVEL HIGHER THAN 20!

This should be no problem in NwN as far as I know.

Most people will simply not allow people with hacked characters on their servers since every DM/GM can/will screen users that will play his modules or on his servers.
