The only must-haves are a rogue and cleric; the other two characters should be fighters or fighter-subclasses. I filled my other two slots with barbarians, one a half-orc and the other an elf I multi-classed out to a sorcerer. You will pick up a sorcerer in the Main Halls, so you really don't need one in your core group.
You will not encounter any monks later in the game, so if you like monks start out with one, especially if you like a monk/rogue or monk/cleric combo.
Paladins are always good to have around, especially in ROMD, which is a brute-force type of game ("If brute force doesn't work, you're not using enough"). Fighters are kind of vanilla, and without the dual-weilding feats, rangers aren't that good. Barbarians are hands down the best knock-down, drag-out butt-kickers in the game. Plus, early on HP and dishing out high melee damage are more important than magic missiles.

Jesus saves! And takes half damage!

before you start over i definatly would consider multi-classing a current character to a rogue. i dont think it will hurt. they level up faster because they get exp. form open chest's etc.
if you are hell bent to start over i would suggest
fighter
fighter/thief
cleric or a cleric/sorcerer
and another fighter class
i am sure you already know you will find a sorcerer as the first npc.
