Morrowind - what's the story?
Hi guys, 'Reaper here.
Recently I have been told about the Elder Scroll series, in particular the game most people seem to love... Morrowind.
I'm thinking of getting the game Morrowind as it looks good and I can picture myself playing it non-stop. But I must admit I do not know much about the game or the series... What I've been told by a number of my friends who either have played it or own it is it's kind of like one of those Medievil games where you create your character, go on adventures and quests and work on a number of RPG like skills. And personally I would like to know some more - from you - the posters and players of the game Morrowind.
Basicly what I'm really interested in is what's the story line behind all the games... Are they connected in some way or are they individual games? Will I need to play previous Elder' games in order to understand Morrowind? What can I do? How much freedom to I have inside the game? And basicly whatever usful information or background information you can give to me.
If you have the time to satisfy my curiousity feel free to tell me anything about the game... But no spoilers please... and if they are really needed please write them in black.
And, also feel free to also tell me why you like the game or what you don't like about the game, maybe some few pointers you can give me when and if I get the game...

It's a completely standalone story from the previous series. You may find references to previous games in in-game literature, but that's all. The game offers enough information for you to become a historian in the game.

You are a prisoner, born on a certain day to uncertain parents. The Emperor of the Empire has ordered you to be sent to the province of Morrowind.
Anything beyond that, and it's spoilers.

Huh, whatcha mean anything beyond that.
There is no actual plot device set for morrowind, you do what you want and the plot unfolds for you that way.
You want to make the game a dungeon crawl, join the basic fighters guild and start beatin' the crap out of things. You want plot, join the blades, and go with the main quest in morrowind, but you don't actually have to follow the plot they give. That's one of the great things about morrowind, it's your world, you make it your own.

If you have a PC with plenty of RAM and a good CPU, MW has the added pleasure of several thousand mods out there in a very active community. As you can run up to 210 mods at one time, many people have done all sorts of things to customize the game, from making it much easier to making it extremely difficult. Some mods add new quests, and even new factions. Other provide more shops, or even entire cities. It's the kind of game that really sucks you in, so that you lose all track of achieving a goal.

@Reaper,
Definitely try to get the game on PC. As Fable says, there are so many great mods out there that add countless hours of gameplay and various improvements. There is a sticky thread on mods you might want to check out.
In terms of the story, one thing that makes this game incredibly immersive are all the in-game books you can read, They really add to game depth and roleplaying.
I don't know if I'd precisely call Morrowind "medieval." I don't know why exactly, but it has always seemed to be apart from the more standard dungeons and dragons fare.
On the downside (though there are some excellent mods that address these problems), the NPCs you encounter tend to be quite generic and lacklustre, and the world, though graphically beautiful, tends to be quite static.
The game is truly worth getting, however. Just make sure that you find the Game of the Year Addition, which includes both expansions. The set is quite cheap these days.
In addition to new quests, and areas, the expansions make the Journal and Map much more functional. Further, most of the best mods require Boodmoon and Tribunal.

Well thanks guys for everything you have done to help me make my decision, with your and my friends comments and some background history from the Elder Scrolls site I have finally made my discision to go and get this game and maybe after another of the Elder Series...
I should be getting Morrowind at least in a couple of days... And who knows, if I do successfully get this game it'll be one more thread I'd be able to participate in.
Thanks again for all you help.

Check the sticky threads out for mod suggestions, and feel free to ask any questions you have. Be sure to check out GameBanshee's walkthrough, too, and the forum's searchable database of answers.

Morrowind was my first game. at the beggining I had a lot of difficulties, but then I had discover how it works and I loved it! One of the things I liked more was that ussually you have a lot of options to do the same thing. For example if you want an object you can sneak and stolen it, you can kill the owner, sometimes you can buy it, sometimes you can persuade the owner to give it to you. In almost every quest you have options you can make and choose. And of course you only do the quests you want, join the factions you like, wear the equipment you prefer... And so long... It's a game about choosing and doing whateaver you want...
