Is the game supposed to be this easy? **Spoiler**
Hmm, what's weird, I have the difficulty bar slid up all the way to the top, so I'm curious if this is the way the game plays normally, as in, it's way to easy.
I figured going to a complete other realm, a new plane of existance, I'd die in a heartbeat, but nope, I got through the tower and got the first part of the oblivion quest to close the gate done with without any potions.
So, is the game like this, and/or will it get tougher down the road. I'm only level three, and closing a gate to another plane doesn't seem what a level three person could potentially do.

Depends on your character level, and skills configuration. If you went for power all the way, and are very familiar with action RPGs, chances are you'll get a character that's optimized for combat and knows how to deal with all the things he/she faces.
But the general consensus that appears to be emerging is that the game levels characters too quickly, penalizes players for focusing on non-essential skills and doing a skills spread, and those that linger too long to look at the world. At last count, there were nine mods redoing character leveling, five of which were serious attempts to create more viable characters on a decent difficulty level.

Missed this! -There's your answer. This is a known problem in character vs critter leveling. The first few levels you're far better balanced against critters. As you rise, they become proportionately much stronger, faster, and healthier than you. There have bee numerous reliable reports of characters defeating the Arena at level 1. But at level 20, it's nearly impossible.

Ahh, that's good. Scamps now, Dremora Lords at level 5, makes perfect sense to me....
Hmmm, I went combat based, but I do have destruction as one of my majors. So yeah, with a single iron longsword and a single potion of healing, it didn't seem right that I could go through that entire tower to start off, but if it does indeed get stronger after I'm done with the whole Kvatch thing, then that's great. I hate a game without a challenge.

Dremora Lords are a bit higher, I think: churls at 3, catiffs at 6, kynvals at 9. But yes, the advancement is out of whack. You start practically as a god, then advance (quickly) to the point where you're a weakling. This is not good, on either end of the spectrum.
I'm running Digizen's SmoothLeveling mod, set to 30 skillups per level on a new character. This is slightly slower than the game's standard rate of advancement, and after I make a few levels, I'll slow it down further. That way, I can adjust my character's advancement to suit my fancy, which was pretty much automatic in Morrowind. One thing I really dislike in Oblivion is forced advancement. I want to move up at my own pace, after seeing the sights, and gradually doing dungeons.

Hmph...that's great then, next time I play, I will never sleep in a bed so I can beat the game at level 1.
Seriously, BethieSoft should redesign their leveling system - maybe they should learn from Fallout, since then are gonna make FO3, and for god's sake, none of their designers dare to have any fishy thought of "trying to improve" SPECIAL - and while they are at it, please kick their character modeler out of the door and hire someone who can really make some decent 3d character models. All the denizens of Cyrodil looks like 60 years old regardless of their actual age, and never match some of the voices. I hate to see an NPC that have a voice of a young lassie, but look like a 60 years old hag.

Less of this "60 years old hag" stuff!
And anyway, only SOME of the women NPCs are haggish. You can't expect young pretty girls everywhere, you know! Most of the pretty girls are Bandits in dungeons and sewers!

Good grief Fable, you weren't kidding. I just became grand champion in the arena, AND beat the orc, took me a little over an hour to do. Where did I start before I loaded the game, pit dog, with one win. That was messed up...

Well guys if the comes too difficult you can always slide the bar to easier.
That's what it's there for. So stop complaining about too difficult.
I kind of like that the oblivion planes get tougher, because great loot comes with the increased difficulty.
As a downside when I realise I can't beat the monsters with my current loot, I go searching for more and level up at the same time, so I have the same problem ahead of me.
I was surprised about the quest rewards, thought they were going to give just some crap

We're not complaining that its too difficult, we're discussing the fact that you can whoop ass in the plane of Oblivion at level 3, yet apparently it gets far more difficult as your level increases.
fable, I'm fishing around for a mod that changes the creature levelling, I'm happy (for now) with the current player levelling system - which I think is what that mod changes.

I have decided to go at it the way it was made, and ...
... and I'm havign so much fun! I'm around lvl 20 and the silliest things are whiping the floor with me. I entered a dungeon last night, got swamped by, sheesh, I don't even remember what except that I ran ... and they still got me.
It is getting more and more difficult, that is true enough, I have no idea what will happen when I enter the Arena ... or anything else, because I am not too far with the MQ either. Oh well...

And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

I've seen nothing that does that, but plenty of mods that change your leveling in relation to the critters. Only the difficulty slider would appear to change the critters, themselves, and no one has really worked out an equation for that.
I'm still running Digizen's Smooth Leveling, though I've now switched to the 30 skillups/level setting as being more realistic. At least it's automatic and I don't have to worry about mini-maxing my skills, though I still feel that some skills are strangely balanced. Athletics always seems to rise quickly, whether I make it a major or leave it out, and alteration rises much more swiftly than the comparable intelligence-based magic school, even if both are at the same level and minors. But there's been a fair amount of discussion on the ES boards already about how leveling code is literally nerfed. (Not as a matter of opinion; it looks like quite a bit of it was referenced out, and some that's in doesn't point to other areas of code as it is evidently intended to.)

Well I'm trying to 'complete' the game as lightly modded as possible first time round. For now I'll stick with adjusting the difficulty slider as the game progresses. There are a few mods that adjust the critter levelling system, but they seem to be still in their infancy and aren't what I can safely call a 'fix' rather than a mod.
Plus I have yet to encounter the problem, so I can't really yet decide what I exactly want changing. Undoubtedly with future characters I'll switch to a more streamlined player levelling system, as I much preferred Galsiah's Character Development in Morrowind, but for now I want the full experiance of the Bethsoft version.
Incidentally, I found this thread on the official forums which catalogues the various tweaks that are around quite nicely.

I have absolutely no trouble beating NPCs with my thief, but I'm constantly getting killed by simple wilderness creatures. It makes no sense that a City Guard can't put a dent in me while a wolf or boar needs only two blocked hits to kill me. As far as I know the NPCs also scale to your level, so why are the animals that much harder?
"We are at a very serious moment dealing with very serious issues and we are not focusing on the name you give to potatoes" - Nathalie Loisau
I was level.. 11 I think when I finally got around to doing the tower thing in Oblivion. I found it to be incredibly hard, and had to rely on the shadows to finish it. I ran out of healing potions half way through, and those fire element things were completely kicking my ass. I think near the end I had to just run through a horde of enemies, jumping this-way-and-that, in order to get to the stone.
But I got through it, and I thought the difficulty was perfect for my character, and the difficulty has been pretty consistent throughout the game! I made a custom class, sort of a cross between an assassin/thief/bard. I called it a Skald
The only easy combat I've dealt with thus far, is
*spoiler*
If you sleep in that boat-inn that's in the imperial city... the boat will take off cause its been hijacked by some bandits. I easily took them all out, with no challenge at all- and that was by using a sword and shield (regularly I'm an archer!)
Aside from that, I've enjoyed the difficulty a lot. Reminds me of Icewind Dale 2. Having to reload a lot, save a lot, and use strategy to overcome the odds. I haven't even touched the difficulty bar, but if things continue to get 'easy', I'll have to make it harder.
