I'd wager you can guess the solution to the problem on your own: your video card sucks. Getting a new one very well may fix the situation, provided the rest of your system is up to par. If you're not against ordering on-line, I'd suggest trying Pricewatch to find a good price on a decent video card. I'd go with at least a Geforce 256. Happy hunting, and I hope you can score yourself a new pixel-pusher!

I'm searching at the moment for a better system, myself. It's hard to believe how quickly video cards have upgraded, come and gone over the last 18 months.
Does anybody have a good recommendation on a top of the line card that will play B&W? And if so, why do you like that particular card?

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I'm most likely gonna buy a geforce 2 mx next month. After what I found out it seems to be a good gpu in relation to the price.
My choice is between Creative Geforce 2 mx with 32 DDR-Ram and Asus V7100 w. TV/out and 32 SD-ram.
To my knowlegde there is not much gained by DDR-ram on a geforce 2 so my choice will most likely be Asus.
But ofcourse if you got the money, either go for the generic geforce 2 with 32-64 ram, or wait a while, so nVida get's the problems with Geforce 3 sorted out, and/or launches a Geforce 3 mx.
But at this time, I would go for a geforce 2 mx, or a geforce 2 if you got a little extra money.
There is also a new gpu comming out, I think Hercules will use this in their next cards, but I can't remember it's name (Kyro or something - it should be just as good, or better than Geforce 2)

Nvidia's the way to go. There are a variety of great cards offered, depending on how much you're looking to spend. Personally, I've got a Geforce2 GTS, which is a 32MB DDR card. If all you're looking for is a good 2D/3D accelerator, that's a good choice. You'll find some at Pricewatch for about $140. It doesn't have too many extras, like TVout (which, Aerith, simply allows you to hook up your computer to your TV), but it's blazingly fast. Beyond that, there's also the Geforce2 Ultra, which ups the ante to 64MB, and the recently released Geforce3.Originally posted by fable:

I've been using Nvidia cards for years now, and haven't run into too many problems that weren't of my own creation. The only thing that I'd make sure of before going out and buying a top-of-the-line card is that the rest of your system can fully take advantage of it. Any of the Geforce2 cards would need at least a 600MHz and 128MB of RAM to pair with it.

I don't personally have any experience with it, but I've heard that it's a good card. Here and here are some pretty thorough reviews of it.Originally posted by fable:
