ag im so torn between the different options in character creation. my biggest torment is whether to choose an all out spell caster with pure destruction or a silent assasin archer. Both really appeal to me
so im trying to create an 'arcane archer', but im stuck. can anybody gimme a hand pleeeease? gimme race/skill combinations please,. as well as any other info.
the character i want weilds a bow and hopefully heavy armour but is there anyway to have them use destruction magicka aswell? please help me i cant bear the struggle in my head any more.
help please with new character
First of all, please put down a general template if you could so we could see waht you ahve to work with.
Personally this is what I would use:
Race: Wood Elf/Dark Elf
Sign: The Thief
Major Attributes: Agility, Willpower
Maj. Skills:
Light Armor
Destruction
Alchemy
Marksman
Acrobatics/Security
Illusion
Sneak

sign: theif/shadow
skills: er.....
marksman
light armour/heavy armour
some magic skills
not very precise i know but i havne't been able to decide on much. how would i mix magic with marksmanship? i love destruction especially how do i include that into my marksmanship abilities?

I have an answer for that. On-contact magic (where you touch someone as opposed to hurling something at them) is stronger and uses generally less magicka. Since you want to use a bow for your ranged attacks, you could focus on aquiring those contact spells for melee fights. That's quite the interesting combination of skills.
Alternatively, you could use magic to complement your desire for a stealth character. Chameleon, invisibility, silent, manipulate. Then you won't be using your magic for direct combat, but it would still be essential to your thief-experience.

You may want to consider a High Elf because of the extra magicka they get. 100 points of extra magicka is a lot and I think really necessary if you want to focus on offensive spells. Breton is a good alternative. Consider The Lady for an additional boost to your magicka. If you don't do these things then you will need to focus on blade or blunt melee. You'll really want one of these skills buffed up anyway. But, with more magicka you'll need to use it less often. Make sure to boost intelligence, willpower, and destruction up quickly so that your spells remain effective.
If I remember correctly, you were heavily in rp back the days of BG and Icewind series...
Well to become what you want (rp wise) in Oblivion you need to somewhat powergame...
Breton seems to be what you want; my suggestion is to focus on Endurance and Int. first (HP and Magica Pool is not enhanced in retro-perspective, unlike in other rp-games)
As for Skills:
choose controllable major Skills; make certain that you have at least one that governs Attributes you need (e.g. Armorer for Endurance)
Skills you need, should be minors (in this way you can decide when to lvlup, not the game engine; always remember to max out Skill Points (get 10 Points in skills that control one Attribute you want to achive multiplier of 5), before getting the 10th point of a major Skill (as your advancement in other skills will be blocked)
Hope this helps (most certainly it will left you totaly confused; sry if so )

Personally, if I were going for a char with Destruction skill, I can see no point in having Marksman as well. You Ranged Destruction spells are better than a Ranged Weapon, imo. A Blade or Blunt skill may be more useful than a bow for close melee work. But it's your choice. If you go for Alchemy as well, you can make poisons for either your Ranged or Melee weapon.
If you want to use Magic, a Dark Elf is better than a Wood Elf (and both are tougher than a High Elf), and has the advantage of 75% Resistance to Fire - VERY useful!
My own suggestions, if you really want a Marksman, are:
Take Intelligence and Willpower as your Class governing attributes (+5 to each). Necessary to spellcasters.
Take either The Warrior (+10 Strength and Endurance), The Lady (+10 Willpower and Endurance), The Thief (+10 Agility, Speed and Luck) or The Mage (+50 Magica)
Skills:
Marksman
Destruction
Alchemy
Alteration
Restoration
Illusion
Sneak
Remember the natural racial skills of your character:
Dark Elf has a natural +10 for Blade and Destruction, and +5 for Marksman (as well as some other +5s)
Wood Elf has +10 Alchemy, Marksman and Sneak (as well as other +5s)

With those skills as majors you will shoot through levels; enemies will lvl with you, so you may lack behind (see other threads -> Oblivion to hard??? (which it isn't))
Wish you luck and a rewarding gaming experience
