Some questions about Soul Gems -SPOILER-

First Question: Where can you find soul gems in large quantities ?
I "looted" the arcane university, all the mages guilds, the mystical emporiums, ... they're never enough... or at least they're too small...
perhaps do you know where to find Azura's star ?
maybe the strange statue of azura you should vist at dusk and dawn has anything to do with it ?

2nd question: Black Soul Gems with 'em you can trap human souls, right ? Is there any Black Gem like the Azura's star ?
Is it true that the mages guild try to kill you if you practise necromancy catching humanoid' souls ? even if you the arch-mage ? (that's what i red in a walktrough.. did you experienced it?)

LVL 18 is not so a bad status afterall, you should trust yourself more...

Soul stones are not growing from the trees, you need to do some effort to find it.

Soul stones can be find in the necromancer quest from the mage guild and mostly in ayleid ruins. Also sold by mages or such places.

I've not tried it, but there is a matter, I fear that not only human souls, all humanoid souls can't be catched. Don't know if thats true.

Eventually I found Azura's Star. You can obtain it by completing a quest given in a sanctuary in the north-east portion of the map.
It is an artifact which works like a soul gem but it isn't lost after the use. This solves a lot of problems.
I found out also the way to catch human and humanoid's souls:
there is an altar, as some of you may know, in the immediate nearness of the entrance of the cave to "Dark Rift" (this is the translation of the italian "Fenditura Oscura". I hope the name is correct.). You should put an empty "Soul Gem ++" (a greater soul gem) in the altar on tirdas night and hit the altar with a soul trap spell. The gem will become black and it would let you trap human's souls. (It also increase the value of the gem --> Black Soul Gem exchanged for 500g even empty!)

So black soul gems have to be made? I was hoping to find some somewhere. The only time I've seen black gems was in the chydinhal recomondation quest, I had to give it to one of the members in the guild. I recently found a shrine that wants black gems but I don't know where to get them.

I believe you need to use an empty Grand Soul Gem, if I remember correctly. There's no black soul gem like Azura's Star that I know of, though.
