Your astonishing ability to be a complete jerk is breathtaking, and shows up brighter than your colorful name at the end of your post.

A clarification for the hard of thinking.

My original intended meaning of Solo, which I pointed to being used in a specialised context by placing it in quotes and by spelling it out, was soloing to complete the game in the most expedient way. This makes it possible to quite easily dispense with a theif as traps are either avoided or thwarted by the use of specific spell protections or other stop gap measures. Please see the solo guides mentioned earlier for details. To attempt the game sans theif and explore all of the options with no prior knowledge is nothing short of suicide.

Yes in all cases you are playing the game

I'm not in any way upset or offended by the lack of courtesy and understanding shown to date. Thanks for your input. - Curdis !

I don't know I might be crazy... It just seems to me that when there's is an apparent misunderstanding it makes more sense to try and rectify it instead of insulting the person, especially considering there are some codes of conduct here on GB. Judging by your join date I'd say you've been here awhile Curdis, so I'm sure you know where to find them.

Say hello to my little friend. Thanks for the defense there Tony, but don't sweat it. Curdis is not only a jerk, but he's also wrong.
My original intended meaning of Solo, which I pointed to being used in a specialised context by placing it in quotes and by spelling it out, was soloing to complete the game in the most expedient way.
So, since you play that way, everybody else should too?
To attempt the game sans theif and explore all of the options with no prior knowledge is nothing short of suicide.
I disagree. It might just be FUN for the player, which I believe is the real purpose of the game.
I'm not in any way upset or offended by the lack of courtesy and understanding shown to date.
You really are a pompous jerk. You must be very disconnected from reality to not realize the attitude you're projecting. Try your middle-school counselor for some help kid.

It's sad actually.

Edit: fixed some quotes code.
Edit2: removed borderline profanity (don't want to get in any trouble, it's not worth it for this dweeb)

I couldn't imagine playing without a thief. O find them to be quite fun to have in the party.

Curdis, Cwell, you''re both walking a fine line that's leading right over into temporary suspension of all posts. This argument between you stops now. If you want to continue throwing insults at one another, take it to PMs.

I have played with a small party that (for a time) had no effective thief. In my case, I had Imoen through the starting dungeon, and I dualled my fighter to a thief after finishing the circus. A thief is useless until they get enough points to distribute around (levels 3-4 at minimum), so that meant completing the Eye without one. There are a few nasty floor traps that I needed to avoid - frankly, deactivating them was only one option - the other was to walk around it - you can go on the red edge of a trap without setting it off.

For chests and doors, et al, had I run into any, it would have been brute force: Hmm... I think there may be a trap here - let me get my guy with the best saves / most hitpoints to open it.

I am curious to know why the person who started this thread (sorry forgot whom you are and the reply box doesn't scroll to the first post  or maybe I just can't find it  ) make either a fighter/theif or fighter/mage/theif to pick up the slack of a basic theif (even though in truth depedind on whom you ask - a specialist thief may be better)

But if thats not an option I personally think you'll miss out on alot :(

Atleast you won't have someone as annoying as Jan with his turnip stories to bore you

If its possible to play without a theif I'm sure your the one who knows !

Handy hint! Thanks. Third time playing through and still learning...

AXK, I wanted to be a sorceror, which rules out multi/dualling; also wanted Aerie (not done that romance), Mazzy and Valygar (never used them before) in a 4-person goody-goody party. Could try Haer Dalis for some of the thief-impossible quests I suppose.

Mind you, I suspect with that party the Twisted Rune is going to give 'em plenty else to think about apart from missing out on a thief.

So far, we've done Umar Hills, Trademeet, DeArnise, Planar Sphere, Harpers. Only had trouble with those insta-kill traps in the Sphere, but now I know how to avoid the like....

So I wouldn't say it's suicide as yet. Have Rod of Resurrection, will open trapped chest... :D

Haer'Dalis is interesting with Aerie...
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

'ello me good smilin' friends. ok i'm just totally confused about this whole conversation. first of all: i got quite upset when you said that solo and playing is two different things. i've finished the game twice soloing now (the only two times i finished the game) and i've rollplayed all along, i haven't just ran through it, i've explored and done all the questes that i think is funny and those that my character would choose. i think that you can acctually get more out of the game when soloing cause you only have your protagonist to count on and therefore need to learn how to use him/her as effective as possible. doesn't mean you have to skipp quests and the like, you just get the chanse to really use every side of your character and use him to 100% wich you often don't when having a whole party of characters.
and if you have a good balanced and versatile character then you don't have to skipp any questes. my berserker -> thief sweaped the floor in the twisted rune's headquarter with the eaystakes of that beholder and the intestines of the rest of that pack so... really that battle was just nearly a challange.

secondly: the first time i soloed i was the berserker -> thief ,mentioned above, so then a had all the thief skills along with find- and remove trap and open locks so then no trap or locked door was a problem. but the second time i beat the game soloing (some 2 hours ago acually) i was playing a kensai -> mage = no thief skills but everything was good then to. knock takes care of the locked doors and chestes so i'm NOT missing anything! and suprisingly i found the traps less of a problem then with my b->t (i think due to my better saves and protections like stoneskin and spellturning wich i used quite frequently)
i mean all protections you need to have to survive all traps is: stoneskin (for the phyical damage), spellturning (for all the spell effectes)
you know, if you're a mage then you have stoneskin on yourself 24:7 or you can have it in a contingency-hit and then you can just cast a minor spellturning when you hear the "click" and "trap sprung". (if you have the robe of vecna and amulet of power then minor spell turning has castingtime 1(originally ct 5)) but to do this you'll obviouslly need a mage or sorcerer instead of a thief...

yeah, but that must be possible. i mean it's all possible with a sorcerer or a mage but. a thief would likly be able to, definitely a bounty hunter. they're soo good, almost to cheesy. i had this party once me, bounty hunter Viconia, Korgan, Edwin (my standard party) and after a while i noticed that i didn't use the npc's, my bounty hunter could alone take care of a bunch of adamantine golems.
