gothic II - learn lockpicking later

Post by Padawan »

Well, I know you all played this game years ago, but hell, I bought it only this year. And only now I found the time to play it.

As usual in RPG games I joined the magicians. As soon as I could. That means that I gained "citizenship" of Khorinis without talking to Thorben, thus losing the possibility that he teaches me how to pick locks.
Because, right now every time I approach him, he answers that his opinion of me is not that good and therefore he will teach me nothing.

And as I am already in the magician guild it seems to me I can't join the thieves guild (my brother keeps convincing me that this should still be possible, but then he IS younger and he DIDN'T play as much as I have).

So, should I try to do something (and what?) to learn this skill (because it is frustrating to hear
<<I know nothing about picking locks>>
again and again.

Have you tried joining the thieves? They are independent of the other guilds and I joined them even after joining the guards/paladins on my first game through so it should still be possible as a magician.

Spoiler

mr_big, thanks for your help during my playing.

SPOILER:

I am trying and trying. Went to the harbor district and asked for a "special" work. The waiter, Kardiff, told me to speak to Nagur about new work. Since he is in the same tavern I did not save (and that means for quite some time - I know, stupid) and went directly to talk to him. Nagur just said: "I dont work with ---- magicians". There was one word that means something like important, high, 'I really don't care about you' word.

And now, he just says that the business went through fine and that he doesn't speak about his employees.

Have you tried going into the thieves guild lair (i'm not sure if you need a key though) and approaching them directly? If you can't do this then I really do not know what to suggest as they are the only people you can learn lockpick from other than the carpenter guy.

Just a thought, but are you sure you can't still learn it from Thorben. All you have to do is prove you are trustworthy. Not sure if you can still do this though, but try speaking to the shopkeeper in the shop nearest the first entrance to the city and ask him if he has any work. If you can get him to ask you to collect money for him from Thorben's daughter/niece or something then you can go to her and offer to pay it for her then Thorben trusts you. Not sure if you can only do this before joining a guild though.

The only other option may be to cheat in order to learn lockpick, but I don't know the codes you will need for that.

Thankx, mr_big, but it is too late for me now.

I am addicted to this game, and just hope that it is not impossible to finish the game without this skill. Well, I am quite sure it is, but it would be much more interesting having it and not leaving anything behind.

not a single person wants to speak with me regarding lockping, so I have to live without it.

Have you tried to take off your robes before speaking to him?
Before i joined the guards in the town, they gave me the quest to infiltrate the thieves guild whitout they knowing that i work for the militia, making me take my clothes off...
Maybe, just maybe that will work for you too...
And,yes you need the key to go to the sewers...

Well, thanks. I figured out that I can complete the game even without having this skill. And I did end it.

It could be true, that having the clothes on while talking to Nagur caused that I cannot learn it. But I did not have a savegame, so I just continued without it.

Btw (SPOILER?), why is it that it is so easy to play as the magician? At least toward the end of the game. And using the hit-and-run method (good old partisians) always works...Tc,tc,tc.

The game is a bit unbalanced so the end game is ridiculously easy no matter which guild you joined. Its the only thing about the game I don't like as I'd have liked it to stay as hard as it was at the start for the entire game.

Magicians imo here are weaker early on but alot better later on in chapter V when you are allowed to learn rain of fire and later from circle 6 army of undead

well, I finished the game a while ago, and now I just can't find the time to play anything. I intentionally don't have a computer for this reason, and the one I'm using now is at my ma's place.

The funny part at this game was that Diego tought me how pick locks, and that when I already went to the island. And you know what he said?
Something like "How could you have come so far without learning this? tc, tc...".

i wanted to kill him. Why didn't I (this just occured to me right now)?
