I was going to guess antibiotics; whenever my friends stop drinking for a period of a few days, it's been antibiotics. Hence, why that sprung to mind.

No, no no no no no. Trust me, being sober at a party is as much fun as pulling the switch to the electric chair the person you love most is strapped in to. I've been sober to more affairs than I care to remember--trust me, I tried drinking, but it didn't help--and it's unpleasant. When you're drunk, you have fun, you enjoy everything and everyone who doesn't piss you off, you make funny jokes in a drunken slurring voice... When you're sober, you realize you're in Hell. You're surrounded by a bunch of loud drunken sods, the place is sweltering hot and jam-packed full of people you really wouldn't want to make skin contact with even in the height of day, and you spend the night just being overly annoyed at one of many things, all of which are just excuses for the one main reason you're mad: they're drunk, and you're not.

Chim, you sound like me. I did Mardi Gras sober one year, and it was pretty dull.

It's just personal experience, but then it's probably also personal taste. I dunno what Fiona's tastes are, but my friends love to go to clubs and bars, and I just like to have fun. But I often find I despise clubs and bars, so I have to drink to have fun. Only once have I ever been conscripted into the designated driver duty, and it was awful; we went to a club that was nothing but heat and bodies. I had a drink anyway in the hopes of calming myself; plus it was early in the evening, and I had plenty of time to sweat it out.

But the drink was worse than vile, and I had half of it before throwing it out. I just can't have fun in a club or bar unless I am drunk, high, or both. If I'm not, I'm a sour old prune... i.e., normal.
