Most of the books are just history of the Forgotten Realms (stuff old-school D&D players already know
). A couple of them (in BGI I know of) have minor quests around them. "History of the Dead Three" is one you might want to read if you don't know the history of Bhaal, Bane, and Myrkul.

Not entirely sure, but all I can say is that in my first game I spent a few early chapters lugging half a library around in my pack convinced that these books must be of some importance later in the game. Eventually I started reading a few, got some very vague hints and info, then sold them for a pretty meagre price to any merchant who wanted them. Having said that, there are a few books within the game which are quest relevant ( you'll rarely find them sitting on a shelf or coffee table) . For example, Korgan will leave your party if you dont help him retrieve the book of Kaza. The rest are pretty extensively covered in the walkthrough, so I wont list them here. So, basically, unless your character is an avid reader who fancies catching up on some history while you rest by the fire, I am not aware of any use for them at all but my fellow adventurers (as always) may have other ideas.
