Spell trouble

Post by ragan greenoak »

Greetings all,

I recently bought the game (the original, not a copy - I'm not a thief) from a local store dealing in used games. Unfortunatly, they did not have the manual. Being used to the ad&d games this was not a problem for me. But i do have a question about the controls and search as I might, I can't come up with the answer. I'm sure it's a rather basic thing and easy to fix, but I just can't see what I'm doing wrong.

I made a sorcerer (now about 10 level). I can see in my spellbook that I have a variety of spells learned but when I click on the "cast" button, I only have a dozen listed, not my complete selection of known spells.

Is there a "shift" control to access my complete listing of spells? Maybe I have to switch to a 2nd page to see all that my guy has learned like in NWN?

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you cast spells of the same level as the ones you are missing? Or are you missing the ability to cast all spells of certain levels?

He has the ability to cast level 4 spells.

Well, for example, I have learned (and can see in his spellbook) Fireball, Dispel Magic, Lightning Bolt & maybe Haste.

If I click on the cast button, I only see Fireball and Haste icons. The others do not appear.

Same thing for my level 4 spells; I've learned Stoneskin & Imp. Invisibility, but my stoneskin icon does not appear in the cast menu.

Did you actually choose those other spells for him to learn, the ones that he can't cast? Because otherwise, it sounds as though you're simply seeing a list of all spells.

I did choose them and can see them in the spellbook option to the left. If I'm not mistaken, I can see all those that I did pick at every level by flipping through the various pages. He knows 5 to 2 spells/spell level, up to spell level 4 and can see those that I chose at every level.

Let me ask this another way around;
If you would have a sorcerer level 20, he would know a rather large amount of spells correct? Does he have access to all of them in the cast button and do they display all on the same area? In other words, what would be the normal way for him to see all of his spells?

Maybe I have a bug or something, I'm used to games like this (played all through BG1 and NWN), I just don't get what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for you help by the way.

You're supposed to see all your spells in the cast menu. If they don't fit, there'll be a scroll button with an arrow on it on the right side. With each spell it shows how many times you can still cast a spell of that level, and casting one reduces all of its level by one, until you rest.
It may be that you can only use new spells after resting, have you tried that? Otherwise, I don't have an idea. Try patching.

If I had a high level sorc, he'd know a relatively small number of spells per level, but have a large number of casts available per level, too, that could be apportioned among that level's spells any way he chose.

Thanks for you help guys. I'll try your suggestions.

In any case, I've reloaded a game I had before all of this trouble started, I'll see if it was just a one time thing.
