problems with more fun with pestilence and the console

Post by mberry »

OK how do I get past the zombies and find the Bishop. I have been told to run past them, but that doesn't seem to work as the swarm all over me. Is there a map anywhere showing the correct route to the Bishop or is it a simple matter of trial and error, getting killed and gradually exploring?

Also what file does the consol edit? The config file or a saved game file? Does a game have to be running when you use it? And how do you undo any changes if yu don't like what you did?

By the way I am using the 3.2 patch and the game seems to be relativly bug free.

First the Bishop:
Pop the zombies at the top of the stairs and the zombie girl in the room across from the stairs. Back to the hall and start popping zombies. Make sure to clear the side-rooms if you don't want to get boxed in. About half-way down the hall there's a chunk of plywood with a hole behind it. Grab the plywood, throw it down the hall, and duck into the concealed hallway. The zombies can't follow you there. It leads to a room further back. Waste the zombies from the safety of the concealed hall, and make for the hall on the right. You reach a room with a hole in the floor. Drop down 2 times. In the hallway, start wasting zombies again and make for the end. You can turn left and hop over a short wall. Make sure and do the zombie girl on your right. You're now in front of the temple doors. Clear the hallway of zombies a ways back from that door, and enter the temple. A short chat with the Bish, and you've got about 7 zombies to kill. Then go for the Bishop.
At least that's how it goes in 1.2.

There are numerous threads on the console. Just search for console and you'll find the tip on how to make it available for you, and some potential problems and how to get around them.

The console can be used to tweak the settings found in the config file, however any changes made to these settings with the console while the game is running will not be persistant. That is, the next time you start the game, any tweaks you made via the console will be undone. To make persistant changes to game settings, you have to manually edit the config.cfg file. There's also an autoexe.cfg file where you can input commands and scripts you want to be run automatically every time the game starts.

Manipulating game variables affects only your current game and are persistant for that game. You just have to know which variables to manipulate to get the desired result. Most of the time, the ones you're looking for can be found in the dialogue files.

And of course it can be used to check the value of variables, execute commands (including "cheats") and run game scripts.

Character damage

What boosts the amount of damage that a charicter can take? And I I am having trouble with a quest is it best to do some easier ones and then come back to it when you are stronger?

You can always come back to this later when your character is stronger. If you want to reduce the damage your character takes, spend xp on Stamina, Dodge, and Wits. These three traits will increase your defense and damage reduction. This is my recommened course of action, especially if this is your first time through the game.

Of course, if you want to just cheat and give yourself a boost to those stats, that option is available. The command is vstats get Stamina X to add X points to your Stamina. This command can be used to add points to anything you can put xp into.

Brother Vick gets up my nose!

the crackhouse can be tough - so I leave it a bit, despite the lure of the XP. one of the big problems is that to get to Vick, there are a lot of zombies and you have go get past quite a lot of them to get to Vick. What I do is buy the fire axe (or sometimes later, the sledge-hammer) and then buff the character whilst going up the stairs - I then go absolutely mental and run down the corridor knocking the zs out of the way - if you are buffed and keep moving, you can get to the end of the first corridor without taking any damage - then I turn right and charge through the well-lit room to the exit in the far corner - there is then a corridor - at the end is an obstacle BUT if you crouch and jump you can jump over it into a corridor running parallel with the first corridor - you run back hacking at anything that appears in front and then turn left into the room with the hole -drop down - again the secret is to keep moving - if you run (and jump obstaclesif necessary), then it is relatively easy to find the double doors and find Brother Vick.

hopefully, if you have done it right, you are almost uninjured at this point - just as well!

good time to save.

after the conversation, I usually run to the far right side of the room, smacking a few zombies as I go. head for the area to the right of where Vick was standing. I then dash into the corner-section of that part of the room and crouch up against the partition-wall facing the way I have come. I ready a firearm and blow away anything that strays into range. usually you need to drop a few zombies, but if you wait until they are close, you usually get a head-shot.
I usually save at that point - all the zs are gone and there is only shot-gun wielding, speed-merchant Vick. if you are lucky, when you look up from where you are crouched, you can see purple cloud throbbing away. if that is the case, then you are in luck, because Vick is standing right next to you. don't be scared! although Vick doesn't shoot through the partition, you can attack him through it with the axe. it came as a surprise, but the axe is treated as if it penetrates the partition, whereas projectiles are treated as hitting it. once you are happy with the state of play, or if Vick moves, go chase him and hit some kind of combat buff - depending on clan - and go in for a melee with him - use the axe, as there is no re-load with it. he carries on shooting you at speed, but an axe to the head eventually ends that.
if need be, run back to the crouch place behind the partition to heal. Vick doesn't often just stand in range to be shot, so you should be able to heal up, ready for another scrap.
Vick downed, you get to go back and report to Damsel and Strauss. take the object from Strauss, much better than money.
