I had that same problem with a windows virus, you might simply need to restore your copy of windows XP.

If you can do a recovery (and not a format) then go for it, it would definitely help.

See what you have running in the system tray. If you've got any screensavers, anti-virus programs, contact managers, etc, running in the background, turn them off completely before playing the game. It sounds like something else in your system is trying to use the same memory space as Oblivion.

yeah, if you don't have the disc for windows, then it's not a good idea to recover or format.

Did your PC come with windows installed on it and no CD? Mine came like that and I did notice that it is possible to do a system recovery with no disc whatsoever on it.

Error popups from IE? Can you be a bit more specific? Please transcribe a couple of these error popups. Are they occurring when you play Oblivion, or outside the game?

@Fable- I've had a virus very similar to this, it basically bugs out IE to make popups all the time, as well as it bugs out your media plugins making it very hard to display any video or audio on a web browser, and as a lot of web pages now have some sort of banner that moves around, it will get those errors all the time, the errors that ask you if you want to send personal information that everybody always says "Don't send."

@Ice-

Two things. One, Recovery isn't the same as restore no. Restore means you make your computer go back in time to an earlier point. Say you made your program do a restore back to December 10th from today's date, that means any cookies, downloaded programs, plug-ins, history, documents you might have created, anything that you did from December 10th to December 18th (today's date) will be erased completely. It's useful to make your computer think it never even got a virus.

Recover however, merely deletes and reinstalls a fresh copy of every windows components, and nothing more than windows components.

The other thing, as it is impossible to uninstall internet explorer, you might try some virus cleaning programs that are free.

Ad-Aware @ Lavasoft - The Original Anti-Spyware Company
Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan
The home of Spybot-S&D!

Try all of those programs, use firefox or some other browser than internet explorer. It's better to have internet explorer shut down all the way if possible.

To make sure it's shut down all the way, hit CTRL ALT DEL, and go to processes. Anything that says "IEXPLORER" just click on it and hit the delete button, and say yes to any other confirmation screen. This is a more effective way to shut down a program if you can't get by with the first tab where it merely says "Not responding."

So yeah, shut down IE, and get one of those programs up and running.

ill try to links you listed and yes that sounds exactly like what my pc is doing i cant view any video's sounds like i have the same virus.. and the other thing is when i close Iexplorer in my windows task manager (by pressing ctrl alt del) i close all the iexplorer then i go into the processes tab and try to close them out there and they just come right back.. lol so i cant really seem to shut it down completly.. but hopefully those links will do something thanks :)

Hmm, if you have multiple IEXPLORER things in the actual process's tab, highlight both (or all) of them at once, press CTRL and keep finding all of them.

Once you have them all highlighted, right click and say "end process tree."
